Beaches Along the Chesapeake Bay
More actions
Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay shoreline offers everything from city beach parks to quieter stretches beside state-park trails. Some public beaches face the Bay itself; others sit along tidal rivers and estuaries connected to it. For an easy family outing, look to developed beaches such as Buckroe; for a park-and-nature visit, consider First Landing or Kiptopeke. Check current access, swimming conditions and facilities before setting out, since rules and seasonal services vary by site.[1]
Choose a beach by experience
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science’s public-beach map can help identify sites where swimming or wading is permitted. It is not a complete inventory of every waterfront park: the map excludes some federal properties and parks where certain water activities are not allowed. Check the beach or park’s own site for the latest access and activity details.[2]
Chesapeake Bay beaches in Hampton Roads
- Buckroe Beach and Park, Hampton: A developed Bayfront beach with about three-quarters of a mile of shoreline, picnic shelters, a playground and seasonal restroom facilities. The city lists the beach and park as open daily from 7 a.m. to sunset; confirm seasonal services and current conditions before visiting.[3]
- Lynnhaven Boat Ramp and Beach Facility, Virginia Beach: A public access point for swimming and fishing in the Bay, west of the Lesner Bridge. The city lists parking, including accessible spaces, a beach-accessible wheelchair and restrooms; check current facility information before you go.[4]
- Other Virginia Beach access points: Kendall Street, Sandalwood, Starfish and Dinwiddie Roads have beach ramps and limited parking, according to the city. Access and parking are more limited than at a staffed park facility, so check the city’s beach information when planning.[5]
State-park shorelines
- First Landing State Park: The park has 1.5 miles of sandy Chesapeake Bay beach frontage. Swimming is unguarded and at your own risk; the park notes that currents are strong near the Narrows and advises against swimming there. A beach-access mat and specialized beach wheelchair are available; contact the park to confirm arrangements and current access.[6]
- Kiptopeke State Park: On the Eastern Shore, Kiptopeke has two unguarded Chesapeake Bay beaches. The north beach is designated for swimming during its seasonal opening; the south beach allows a wider mix of activities, including swimming, fishing, crabbing and boating. Swimming is at your own risk, and park rules differ between the two beaches.[7]
Beaches on tidal rivers
Some popular public beaches are on rivers that flow into the Chesapeake rather than on the open Bay shore. Their setting can feel sheltered, but the exact waterway and local rules matter.
- Yorktown Beach: A public beach on the south side of the York River, along Yorktown’s waterfront. Pair a shoreline visit with time in historic Yorktown; check local information for current swimming and waterfront conditions.[8]
- Colonial Beach: The town lists several public beach locations along the Potomac River, including a downtown boardwalk beach and smaller beach areas. Review the town’s beach rules and location details before visiting.[9]
Plan a safe, practical visit
- Confirm the water and activity rules. Swimming may be unguarded, restricted to a designated area or unavailable on a particular day. Virginia State Parks advises checking each park’s swimming availability; at First Landing and Kiptopeke, Bay swimming is unguarded and at the swimmer’s own risk.[10]
- Check beach reports and advisories. VIMS provides Chesapeake Bay beach reports and public-beach mapping; consult these alongside local or park notices before entering the water.[11]
- Plan for the facilities you need. Parking, restrooms, accessibility features, lifeguards and seasonal amenities vary by location. Confirm current details with the managing city or park, especially outside the main beach season.
