History and character
The beach sits beside a town whose history reaches well beyond the Revolutionary War. Yorktown was established in 1691 and grew into a significant tobacco port, with its waterfront serving as a working shore lined with wharves, warehouses, and businesses. In 1781, the town became the setting for the siege that ended major combat in the American Revolution. Today, the beach and Riverwalk offer a contemporary way to experience the same riverfront landscape, with historic Yorktown and the battlefield nearby.[5]
Planning a trip
The beach is on Water Street in Historic Yorktown. The county lists public parking in several designated lots around town, including the Riverwalk Landing parking terrace; restrictions and availability vary, so check current parking information and follow posted signs. The complimentary Yorktown Trolley connects the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center, the beach, and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, but confirm its current service before relying on it.[6]
A Mobi-Mat provides a firmer route across the sand for visitors using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers. The county also describes a Mobi-Chair for water access; contact the county ahead of your visit to confirm availability and current borrowing requirements. The beach may have sharp shells, so water shoes are worth considering. Swim only within the marked buoys, and keep an eye out for jellyfish.[7]
Beach rules differ between the county beach, nearby National Park Service beach areas, and the picnic area. For Yorktown Beach, the county lists tents as permitted during the day, but prohibits alcohol, dogs, loud music, grills, and glass; fishing from or climbing on rocks is also prohibited. Check the current rules before bringing pets or equipment, and do not assume neighboring waterfront areas have the same policies.[8]
