Mineral springs, mountain recreation and the Omni Homestead
Bath County is a rural mountain destination west of the Shenandoah Valley, where the long-running tradition of “taking the waters” meets hiking, fishing and quiet back-road scenery. Warm Springs is the county seat; Hot Springs, a separate community, is home to the Omni Homestead Resort. The area is part of the Alleghany Highlands, a region marketed for its outdoor recreation, historic towns and arts. [1][2]
The county’s best-known experiences center on its natural warm springs and its mountain landscape. Visitors can plan a historic soak, a resort stay, a day on the trails or a mix of all three; rural roads and limited cell service in parts of the county make it sensible to download directions and confirm access, reservations and seasonal operations before setting out. Why visit Bath County?
Bath County offers a slower-paced mountain trip shaped by water, landscape and hospitality. The Warm Springs Pools preserve a historic bathing tradition, while the Omni Homestead provides a full-service resort experience in Hot Springs. Beyond the resorts, state-park trails, lakes and scenic drives make it easy to build an itinerary around the outdoors. [4]
What to see and do
Visit the historic bathhouses surrounding naturally warm mineral springs in Warm Springs. Reservations and current visitor arrangements should be checked with the operator before traveling. [5]
Explore a mountain park with a lake, fishing, cabins and a network of hiking, mountain-biking and bridle trails. Seasonal facilities and current conditions can change, so check the park’s official information before visiting. [6]
The historic resort in Hot Springs offers lodging, dining and recreation; access to specific amenities and activities may depend on reservations, season and guest arrangements. [7]
Mountain hikes and overlooks
Choose from local trails and scenic stops, including the Cascades Gorge hike and Dan Ingalls Overlook. Trail distances, conditions and access details vary; consult current local guidance before heading out. [8]
Lake Moomaw and Bolar Mountain
Lake Moomaw is a regional draw for water-based recreation, with the Bolar Mountain area among the places to explore. Confirm current facilities, rules and seasonal access with the managing agencies before visiting. [9]
History and character
Bath County was formed in 1790 from portions of Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier counties, and took its name from the English spa town of Bath. Its first county court met in 1791 at Margaret Lewis’s home in what is now Warm Springs. Mineral springs have shaped the area’s reputation and visitor economy for generations. [10]
The Warm Springs Pools and the Homestead tell related but distinct parts of that story: the pools are historic bathhouses built around the springs, while the Homestead grew into a large resort serving travelers drawn to the mountain setting and waters. Today, the county’s identity also rests on outdoor recreation and its ties to the broader Alleghany Highlands. [11]
Planning a visit
Bath County is best explored by car, with time allowed for winding mountain roads and stops between its communities and recreation areas. Some rural locations may have limited or no cell service; save maps or directions in advance and check local road and trail conditions. [12]
For a spring-focused visit, check reservation requirements and current operating details for the Warm Springs Pools. If Douthat State Park is on the itinerary, confirm seasonal facilities, activity availability and park guidance directly with Virginia State Parks. Lodging ranges from resort stays to other local accommodations; check individual providers for current availability and terms. [13][14]
