C&O Railway history
Clifton Forge is a small Alleghany Highlands town whose story is closely tied to the railroad that crossed the mountains. The C&O Railway made it a major service and freight center, and the C&O Railway Heritage Center now interprets that history through the people, places, and technology of the railroad.[1][2]
The town makes a focused stop for railway enthusiasts and travelers exploring the mountain region. Pair the heritage center with a look around town, then consider nearby outdoor destinations such as Douthat State Park or Falling Spring Falls.[3]

Clifton Furnace
The town takes its name from an early ironmaking site in Rainbow Gap. Clifton Furnace operated from the early 19th century; the surviving stone furnace dates to 1846. The property is owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation, so check access conditions and respect any posted restrictions before visiting.[8]
History and character
The area’s development reflects two industries: iron and rail. The Town of Clifton Forge describes the settlement’s growth along the Jackson River, the influence of the local iron industry, and the road over North Mountain completed in 1826. The name “Clifton Forge” comes from an iron forge named Clifton, associated with the early industrial landscape near Iron Gate.[9]
Rail service arrived in 1857, and Clifton Forge grew into a major C&O maintenance location. The railway’s shops and yards supported locomotives and freight moving across the mountains. As rail technology and operations changed, the town’s role changed too; its railway heritage remains visible through the C&O Historical Society and its heritage center.[10][11]
