Type

Setting

Known for
UVA Wise, downtown events and Appalachian culture

Wise is a compact mountain town in Virginia’s far southwest, with a historic downtown, locally owned shops and restaurants, and the campus of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise nearby. It makes a good base for a low-key visit centered on regional culture, community events and outdoor outings rather than a single marquee attraction.[1][2]

Start downtown: Big Glades Community Square hosts outdoor concerts, movies and other public gatherings, while the town’s event calendar highlights festivals and seasonal activities. For a broader sense of the region, pair time in Wise with nearby mountain towns, heritage-music venues and historic sites across [[Southwest Virginia]].[3]

Why visit Wise?

Wise offers an approachable small-town stop in the Appalachian highlands: stroll Main Street, check the schedule at Big Glades, and explore the college-town setting. The surrounding region adds opportunities for hiking, paddling, camping and music-focused day trips, though many attractions and events are outside the town itself. Confirm event dates and access details before setting out, since schedules change seasonally.[4][5]

What to see and do

Big Glades Community Square

This downtown gathering place has an outdoor amphitheater and hosts concerts, outdoor movies and other public events. Check the town’s calendar for current programming before visiting.[6][7]

Downtown Wise

Walk the historic downtown and browse local shops and places to eat. UVA Wise describes downtown as a short stroll from campus; individual businesses set their own hours and schedules.[8]

UVA Wise campus

The college opened in 1954 and grew from local efforts to bring public higher education to far southwestern Virginia. Visitors interested in the campus can check the college’s visit page for tour arrangements, directions and current parking information.[9][10]

Seasonal festivals and performances

The town promotes community festivals, outdoor programming and performing arts. Dates and details vary by year, so consult the Town of Wise calendar and UVA Wise or Pro-Art listings when planning around a show or event.[11][12]

History and character

The area now known as Wise was first called the Big Glades. It became the town of Gladeville when Wise County was formed in 1856; the name changed to Wise Court House in 1858 and was shortened to Wise in 1895. The town’s early growth was tied to the county seat, while later regional development was shaped by coal, iron and rail transportation.[13]

The college is another defining part of the town’s story. UVA Wise began in 1954 after local residents advocated for a college in the region; its early campus was established on the former county poor farm. Today, Wise’s identity combines civic and educational life with the wider traditions and landscapes of the Appalachian region.[14]

Planning a visit

Wise is reached by road, with US 23 serving as the main approach to town and UVA Wise. The college recommends staying on US 58 to US 23 when approaching from some routes, rather than following GPS directions onto smaller mountain roads; check current directions and road conditions before travel.[15]

Plan time for a downtown walk, then build the rest of your visit around an event, campus visit or regional outing. Town events and campus tours operate on their own schedules; verify dates, arrangements, parking and any admission details directly with the organizer. For visitor information, the Town of Wise and Wise County tourism pages are useful starting points.[16][17][18]
