The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) brings together the long, complicated story of Virginia in one place. Its galleries pair artifacts and personal stories with broad themes, from the Commonwealth’s regions and early history to its role in the wider American story. The museum’s long-term exhibition, The Story of Virginia, traces 16,000 years of history, while changing exhibitions and public programs offer reasons to return.[1]
Set in Richmond’s Museum District near the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the VMHC is both a visitor attraction and a research institution. A visit can be a focused gallery stop or a longer outing that includes the museum’s orientation film, family learning spaces, café, and store. Check the museum’s official visit and exhibition pages before setting out: hours, admission, parking, and what is on view can change.[2]
Plan a trip to Virginia Museum of History & Culture
Why visit the Virginia Museum of History & Culture?
Virginia’s past is not a single storyline, and the VMHC gives visitors room to encounter its varied regions, people, and experiences. The permanent galleries and rotating exhibitions connect objects and individual lives with larger questions about culture, power, identity, and civic life. The museum also works with history organizations around the Commonwealth, bringing statewide perspectives into its exhibitions and programs.[3]
It is a useful stop for travelers who want context for the historic places they are visiting elsewhere in Virginia. The museum’s research library and collections add depth for genealogists, students, and curious visitors, while the galleries make the material accessible to a general audience. Start here
If it is your first visit, begin with The Story of Virginia for a chronological introduction, then follow your interests into the changing exhibitions. The museum’s visitor guide can help you orient yourself, and the official exhibition listings show what is currently on view. Allow extra time if you want to browse the store, stop at the café, or visit the research library, whose opening schedule differs from the galleries.[4]
What to see and do
Use the signature exhibition as a broad introduction to the Commonwealth’s history, from deep prehistory through later eras. The museum describes the display as drawing on archaeological holdings and other objects to tell a comprehensive story.
Look for exhibitions that connect regional landscapes and communities with the state’s wider history. The museum’s Our Commonwealth exhibition was developed with partners from across Virginia.

Exhibitions change over time. Review the VMHC’s current listings before your visit, especially if you are planning around a particular subject or display.
History and significance
The institution began in 1831 as the Virginia Historical Society, a private, nonprofit organization formed to collect and preserve material related to the Commonwealth’s past. Its early collections included books, manuscripts, museum objects, and natural-history specimens. The society’s first president was Chief Justice John Marshall, and former president James Madison was its first honorary member.[5]
After periods of upheaval and growth, the organization expanded its public role through galleries, education, and statewide partnerships. In 2018, the Virginia Historical Society announced the name Virginia Museum of History & Culture for its Richmond museum, reflecting a renewed emphasis on public engagement and a broader telling of Virginia’s history. A major renovation completed in 2022 added exhibition space, an orientation theater, family learning areas, an updated research library, and guest amenities.[6][7]
The museum’s work extends beyond its galleries. Its collections include books, manuscripts, family papers, photographs, maps, art, textiles, furniture, and other historical objects; its library is available to researchers. The institution also supports history projects and organizations through statewide programs and partnerships.[8]
Planning a visit
The museum is at 428 N Arthur Ashe Boulevard in Richmond’s Museum District. The official visitor page currently lists gallery, café, and store hours as daily, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; it also lists holiday closures. Confirm hours and admission details on the official site before traveling, as schedules and prices may change. The research library has a separate schedule and is not open every Saturday.[9]
Paid parking is available behind the museum, with entrances from Kensington Avenue and near the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts parking garage. Parking arrangements and charges can change, so check current directions and parking information before arrival. The museum also provides accessibility information and guest rules on its official website.[10]
For a smoother visit, check the current exhibition list and events calendar in advance. If you are interested in research rather than only the galleries, review the library’s hours and visitor information separately. The museum’s café and store are open during listed museum hours, but confirm current service details before making them part of your plan.[11]
