Beaches, boardwalk, outdoor recreation and maritime history
Virginia Beach is a coastal destination with more than one pace. The busy Virginia Beach Oceanfront pairs a broad sandy shoreline with a three-mile boardwalk, while the city’s other districts reach from Chesapeake Bay beaches to the quieter sands of Sandbridge and the countryside around Pungo.[1]
Beyond the beach, visitors can explore maritime and local history, coastal woodland, arts districts and marine life. The best trip depends on which side of the city you want to experience: a resort stay near the Oceanfront, a nature-focused visit around First Landing State Park, or a drive between the city’s distinct coastal and inland areas.[2][3]
Plan a trip to Virginia Beach
Why visit Virginia Beach?
Virginia Beach is more than a strip of oceanfront hotels. Its coastline meets the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, with neighborhoods and districts that range from the lively resort area to quieter beaches and inland farmland. That variety makes it possible to combine a classic beach break with outdoor exploration, local food and cultural stops.[4]
The Oceanfront is the city’s best-known visitor hub, centered on the beach and boardwalk. For a different scene, head to First Landing State Park for wooded trails and Chesapeake Bay shore, or explore the ViBe Creative District for murals, galleries and independent shops.[5][6]
What to see and do
Spend time on the Atlantic shore and stroll or cycle the boardwalk, which runs between 2nd and 40th Streets. The district also has restaurants, shops and seasonal entertainment; check official listings for current event details.[7]
Trade the resort strip for maritime forest, cypress swamps, trails and Chesapeake Bay beach. The park’s land and waterways have a long history of Indigenous use and later travel and settlement; check the state park’s official page for current conditions, fees and access information.[8]
Explore marine and coastal life at this major indoor attraction. Confirm current exhibits, admission information and hours with the aquarium before setting out.[9]
See Virginia Beach’s lighthouse heritage at Cape Henry. Visit Virginia Beach describes the site’s two lighthouses; access and visitor arrangements can vary, so check current official information before planning a visit.[10]
Sandbridge and the Chesapeake Bay
For a quieter coastal outing, compare the Atlantic-facing sands of Sandbridge with the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Each has a different setting from the central Oceanfront; check local guidance for current beach access and conditions.[11]
History and character
The coast near Cape Henry is closely associated with the early English settlement story in Virginia. First Landing State Park identifies its location as the place where English colonists first landed in 1607 before going on to establish Jamestown. The park’s broader history also includes Indigenous use of the area and the work of African American Civilian Conservation Corps crews who helped build the park in the 1930s.[12]
The modern resort community developed later. The railroad reached the area in the late 19th century, helping a coastal resort grow; Virginia Beach was incorporated as a town in 1906. The present-day city took shape through the 1963 consolidation of the city of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County.[13][14]
Today the city’s identity is shaped by both tourism and everyday local life. The Oceanfront draws visitors to the beach, boardwalk and waterfront businesses; elsewhere, the ViBe Creative District, Town Center and Pungo offer different ways to experience the city beyond the shoreline.[15]
Planning a visit
Virginia Beach is spread across a large area, so choose a base that suits your plans. Staying near the Oceanfront puts the boardwalk, beach and many visitor services close together; a visit focused on parks or Sandbridge may call for more driving between stops. The city’s official visitor guide and district information can help you match lodging and activities to the part of town you want to explore.[16][17]
For an outdoor-focused day, check the state park’s official page before visiting: hours, fees, facilities and access arrangements can change, and the park notes that busy weekends may bring parking delays or capacity limits. For the boardwalk, aquarium and other attractions, confirm current hours, events and admission directly with the relevant official organization.[18][19]
