Nauticus

Ship type
Iowa-class battleship

Visitor experience
Self-guided and guided tours

Berthed beside Nauticus in downtown Norfolk, the USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is a museum ship where visitors can walk the decks of a former battleship and get a sense of its scale at close range. A self-guided route explores shipboard spaces and exhibits; guided tours offer access to additional areas, depending on the tour and current availability.[1]

Wisconsin served in World War II, the Korean War and Operation Desert Storm. Its history links Norfolk’s waterfront to the broader story of U.S. naval service, while its position next to Nauticus makes it easy to pair a ship visit with the maritime museum. Check Nauticus’s current hours, admission details, tour offerings and access notices before setting out.[2]

Why visit USS Wisconsin?

The ship is both a historic artifact and a large, walk-through attraction. Its decks, gun turrets and working spaces help make the scale of a battleship tangible, while the exhibits and interpretation explain how the ship and its crew served across several decades. Nauticus describes Wisconsin as an Iowa-class battleship and offers self-guided access as well as separately offered guided tours.[3]

Start here

Begin with the self-guided visit if you want to explore at your own pace. If you are interested in spaces beyond the regular visitor route, look into a guided tour: Nauticus lists options focused on the ship’s topside, command areas and engine-room spaces. Tour types, schedules and availability can change, and some require an additional charge and general admission.[4]

What to see and do

History and significance

The keel of USS Wisconsin was laid at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1941. The ship was launched on December 7, 1943, and commissioned on April 16, 1944. During World War II it operated in the Pacific, supporting operations connected with the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. It later served in the Korean War and was recommissioned in 1988 after a period in reserve.[5]

Wisconsin served during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and was decommissioned that September. The Naval History and Heritage Command records five battle stars for its World War II service and one for Korea. The ship is now berthed beside Nauticus in Norfolk, where it serves as a public attraction and a preserved reminder of the people and technology behind naval service.[6]

Planning a visit

Nauticus lists the Battleship Wisconsin as part of its visitor experience and publishes current admission, operating hours and tour information on its official visitor page. Because hours, prices, tour schedules and ship access can change, confirm those details directly with Nauticus before visiting. Some guided experiences require a separate tour ticket in addition to general admission.[7]

The ship is at One Waterside Drive in downtown Norfolk, beside Nauticus and the Half Moone cruise terminal. Check the official site for directions and current visitor information, especially if your visit coincides with a special event or cruise activity.[8]
