Stuart is the county seat of Patrick County, Virginia, where Routes 8 and 58 meet in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Its compact center has two distinct sides: Uptown, with the courthouse and civic buildings, and Downtown, with local businesses, community venues, and the Mayo River Rail Trail. For a small-town visit, Stuart offers an easy blend of local history, a walkable trail, and a base for exploring the wider county.[1]

Start with a stroll through the historic center, then follow the former railway corridor along the river. The town also connects visitors with Patrick County’s mountain-music heritage and nearby sites such as Laurel Hill, the birthplace of J.E.B. Stuart. Check local listings before setting out: event schedules and attraction access can vary.[2][3]

Why visit Stuart?

Stuart makes a rewarding stop for travelers interested in small-town history and the everyday landscape of Southwest Virginia. Its Uptown historic district brings together courthouse-centered civic life and buildings from several eras; Downtown follows the story of the railroad and the commercial life that grew around it. The Mayo River Rail Trail adds an outdoor break within town, while county attractions and music events make it a practical starting point for a longer Patrick County visit.[4][5]

What to see and do

Explore the Uptown historic district

Walk around the courthouse-centered district and notice its civic, commercial, and religious buildings. The Stuart Uptown Historic District is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Some listed properties are private; view them respectfully from public streets.[6]

Walk or ride the Mayo River Rail Trail

This downtown trail follows the route of the Danville and Western Railway beside the Mayo River. It is described by the county tourism organization as a 1.8-mile route for walking and bicycling; check current local information before visiting for conditions and access details.[7]

Look for the railroad legacy

The former Danville and Western line shaped Stuart’s growth and linked local farms and businesses to wider markets. The trail follows part of its route, and the town highlights a restored caboose as another reminder of the railway era.[8][9]

Discover local history

The town identifies the Patrick County Historical Museum, the courthouse, and the Star Theatre among its historic and cultural points of interest. Confirm opening arrangements with the relevant local organization before planning a visit to an indoor attraction.[10]

Find music and community events

Stuart is a gateway to The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. The town describes Patrick County Music Association concerts at the John D. Hooker Memorial Building at Rotary Field, alongside a broader calendar of local performances and seasonal events. Check current schedules before traveling.[11]

Visit Laurel Hill

Outside town, Laurel Hill is the birthplace of J.E.B. Stuart. The grounds include walking paths and interpretive signs; its visitor information and seasonal access details should be confirmed before making the drive to Ararat.[12]

History and character

The community was originally known as Taylorsville and became Patrick County’s seat when the county was formed in 1791. The arrival of the Danville and New River Railroad in the early 1880s brought rapid growth. Taylorsville was incorporated in 1884 and renamed Stuart, honoring Confederate Major General J. E. B. Stuart, who was born west of town in what is now Patrick County.[13]

That history remains legible in the town’s two-part layout. Uptown centers on the courthouse and the historic district; Downtown grew around the railway depot and commercial activity. The railway’s legacy is also visible in the Mayo River Rail Trail, which follows the former line. Today Stuart presents itself as a small civic and business center for the surrounding county, with local events and music adding to its character.[14][15]

Planning a visit

Stuart is a driving destination in Patrick County, at the junction of Routes 8 and 58. Downtown is a convenient place to begin exploring the rail-trail and town center. To make a fuller day of it, pair a walk through town with a museum or historic site, but verify current opening information directly with the attraction or local tourism office before you go.[16]

For outdoor time, the Mayo River Rail Trail follows a former railway alignment through downtown. For music and community events, consult the Town of Stuart’s calendar and the Patrick County visitor guide, since dates and programming change. Laurel Hill is beyond the town in Ararat, so allow time for the drive and confirm site information before leaving Stuart.[17][18]
