Boating, fishing and lakeside recreation
At the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Smith Mountain Lake is a destination built around the water: its coves and channels invite boating, kayaking and fishing, while shore parks offer trails, picnicking and seasonal swimming. The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce describes the lake as covering more than 20,000 acres, with over 500 miles of shoreline. For a mix of outdoor activities and an easy base for exploring the area, start at Smith Mountain Lake State Park. [1]
Why go
Smith Mountain Lake suits visitors who want a water-focused getaway without giving up land-based options. The lake is popular for recreational boating, and local outfitters offer rentals and ways to get on the water; the regional chamber recommends reserving ahead during the busy late-spring-to-mid-September period and holiday weekends. [2]
The experience changes with the season. Warm-weather visits center on boating and swimming, while spring and fall can offer a quieter lake and comfortable conditions for exploring parks and nearby trails. Check current availability before making plans: water access, rental services, events and park facilities may be seasonal.
Highlights
Smith Mountain Lake State Park
The park combines lake access with hiking trails, a beach, a boat ramp, picnic areas, camping and cabins. Its 13 trails range from half a mile to three miles and pass through woods, coves and lake-view spots. Confirm current facilities, fees and seasonal beach operations with Virginia State Parks before visiting. [3]
Boating and paddling
Explore the lake by motorboat, kayak or paddleboard. Rental choices and availability vary by operator and season; book ahead for peak periods, and check local guidance before launching.
Swimming and shoreline time
Smith Mountain Lake State Park has a 500-foot beach, with guarded swimming offered seasonally when staffing and conditions allow. The chamber also lists a beach at Smith Mountain Lake Community Park. Verify dates, hours, admission and swimming conditions directly with the parks before you go. [4]
Trails and wildlife
Beyond time on the water, park trails offer a chance to walk through forest and look out over secluded coves. Smith Mountain Lake State Park also runs nature and interpretive programming; schedules vary, so check its current events calendar.
Local events
The region’s calendar includes seasonal festivals and community events. Dates and details change from year to year; consult the chamber’s current event listings when planning around a particular weekend. [5]
History and character
Smith Mountain Lake is a reservoir created by a hydroelectric project on the Roanoke River at Smith Mountain Gap. Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation says Appalachian Power began creating the lake in 1960; dam construction was completed in 1966. The company donated land for a state park, which opened to the public in 1983. [6]
The surrounding region is more than a shoreline resort area. The state park preserves evidence of earlier farming and settlement, including a tobacco barn and stone fence, and its interpretive displays explore the landscape and the people who lived here before the lake. [7]
Planning a trip
The lake region spans parts of Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania counties, so allow time for driving between different access points and attractions. Decide whether your visit is centered on a particular marina, park or lodging area, and check directions and access details with the relevant operator before setting out.
For a park-focused visit, Virginia State Parks provides current information on trails, facilities, lodging, camping, fees and seasonal beach operations. Beach service and swimming conditions can change, so confirm them close to your visit. [8]
For boating, rentals and local visitor information, the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce publishes an annual visitor guide and maintains listings for places to stay, eat and explore. Make reservations early for peak summer dates, and check directly with businesses for current hours and availability. [9]
