Near Williamsburg, Virginia, New Quarter Park offers a change of pace from the area’s historic sites: wooded trails and meadows, recreation facilities, and a launch area beside tidal water. The 545-acre York County park has hiking and mountain-bike trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, picnic areas, playgrounds, sports courts and a floating fishing pier. There is no entrance fee, though disc golf, kayak rentals and some reservations may cost extra.[1]

The park’s appeal is both recreational and historical. Its setting includes mature woodland, meadows and tidal-creek habitat, while a marked Civil War history site interprets earthworks associated with the 1862 fighting around Williamsburg. Check the county’s current hours, weather notices and activity details before setting out; schedules vary by season and the gates may remain closed during inclement weather.[2][3]

Why visit New Quarter Park?

New Quarter Park is a good choice for a half-day outdoors, whether you want a walk through wooded terrain, a round of disc golf, a picnic or time by the water. Its mix of natural areas and active recreation makes it useful for families and groups with different interests. Wildlife watchers can explore the park’s woodlands, meadows and tidal-creek environments; paddlers can use the launch facilities, and anglers can fish from the floating pier.[4][5]

It also offers a quieter way to encounter the history of the Williamsburg area. A county-described interpretive marker points to Confederate earthworks in the park area and explains their role in the 1862 campaign on the Virginia Peninsula.[6]

History and significance

The name “New Quarter” appears in a 1723 diary entry by Robert “King” Carter, who described the land as one of his “quarters,” or agricultural properties. York County says the 545-acre tract was formerly part of Camp Peary and was acquired in 1976 through the Federal Surplus Land Program. The county opened the park in 1984.[10]

The landscape also preserves evidence of the Civil War period. York County’s historic-resources material says the park-area marker interprets Confederate earthworks constructed to delay a Union advance toward Richmond; it also places the present-day park area within the Battle of Williamsburg in early May 1862. The marker connects the park’s wooded terrain to a wider military landscape across the peninsula.[11]
