Why go

Come for a trip that can move easily between history and the outdoors. Lexington’s red-brick sidewalks connect shops, restaurants and historic buildings, while Washington and Lee University and Virginia Military Institute give the compact city a strong campus presence. Beyond town, Natural Bridge State Park offers a memorable walk beneath its namesake limestone arch, and the county’s river valleys and mountain roads invite slower exploration. [2][3]

The region rewards a little time beyond the main sights. Its historic story includes Indigenous presence, settlement along the Great Wagon Road, slavery and African American community life, education, transportation, and the changing uses of its rivers and farms. The local tourism organization offers walking-tour maps and visitor-planning help; check its current information before setting out. [4][5]

Highlights

Walk the historic Main Street district for brick sidewalks, local shops, restaurants and architecture, with the university campuses nearby.

Follow Cedar Creek beneath the limestone arch and onward toward Salt Peter Cave, Lost River and Lace Falls. Check park conditions, access and current fees before visiting.

Explore a drive-through wildlife park and walk-through Safari Village in Natural Bridge. Seasonal schedules and admission details can change, so confirm them with the park.

A dramatic river gorge and protected natural area where the Maury River cuts through mountain terrain. Check access and parking information before heading out.

Small towns and country roads

Brownsburg, Glasgow, Raphine, Fairfield and Rockbridge Baths offer quieter stops amid the region’s farms, river landscapes and historic communities.

History and character

Rockbridge County was formed in 1778 from parts of Augusta and Botetourt counties and named for Natural Bridge. The area’s early routes included the Great Wagon Road, which followed an Indigenous footpath; today, U.S. Route 11 runs along much of the same general corridor. Natural Bridge itself became an early tourist destination, and Thomas Jefferson purchased the landmark and surrounding land in 1774. [6][7]

Lexington developed as a regional center, with colleges that grew from early educational institutions. Washington and Lee University traces its origins to Augusta Academy, while Virginia Military Institute opened in Lexington in 1839. The campuses and their public cultural offerings remain part of the town’s character; check each institution’s visitor information for current access and schedules. [8]

The area’s history also includes the lives and contributions of Black residents, from early free Black communities to the segregated neighborhoods, businesses and institutions of later generations. A self-guided Black History Walking Tour focuses on downtown Lexington and surrounding neighborhoods; maps are available through the local visitor center. [9]

Rivers shaped commerce as well as scenery. The Maury and James carried locally produced goods, and canal and railroad routes later linked the region to wider markets. The Chessie Nature Trail follows part of the former canal and railroad corridor along the Maury River. [10]

Planning a trip

Make Lexington your base if you want restaurants, historic streets and campus attractions within easy reach, then use a car to explore Natural Bridge and the county’s smaller communities. A day can pair a downtown walk with one major outdoor stop; a longer stay leaves room for museums, scenic drives and river or trail time.

Natural Bridge State Park’s Cedar Creek Trail descends from the visitor center and passes beneath the arch. The route includes stairs; visitors seeking an alternative should contact park staff in advance about available accommodations. Trails, facilities, fees and operating schedules may vary, so confirm details with Virginia State Parks before travel. [11][12]

For current visitor maps, itinerary ideas and local guidance, contact Lexington & Rockbridge Area Tourism. The Virginia Safari Park is in Natural Bridge, off Interstate 81; check its official website for seasonal hours, tickets and entry information. [13][14]
