Smithfield ham, local history and riverside scenery
Isle of Wight County brings together rural roads, river landscapes and historic communities in Coastal Virginia. For visitors, Smithfield is a natural starting point: its historic Main Street, local shops and museums make an easy base for exploring the county. The town’s visitor information center can help with trip planning and local recommendations.[1]
The county’s appeal lies in the contrast between a walkable small-town visit and quieter stops along the James River. Explore Smithfield’s connection to the ham industry, then add a historic church, an outdoor park or a county heritage site to build a day around local stories and scenery.[2]

Why visit Isle of Wight County?
The county suits travelers who enjoy history without needing a large museum district or a packed itinerary. Smithfield’s Main Street gives the visit a clear center, while nearby historic sites and parks provide reasons to venture beyond downtown. The destination organization’s suggested itinerary combines museums, historic buildings and riverfront sites, making it a useful starting point for planning a day or overnight stay.[3]
Smithfield ham is part of the area’s identity, but the experience is broader than food: the county’s history spans Indigenous communities, English settlement, war and changing local industries. The Isle of Wight County Museum interprets several of those themes, including the ham trade and the history of the Blackwater River.[4]
What to see and do
Walk the historic town center, browse local shops and galleries, and use the visitor information center to orient your county visit.[5]
Isle of Wight County Museum
Explore exhibits about county history, the Smithfield ham industry, the Blackwater River and other local subjects. The museum also displays the well-known “world’s oldest ham”; check the museum’s official site for current visitor information before going.[6]
Historic St. Luke’s Church
Visit this historic church and museum near Smithfield for a closer look at the region’s religious and architectural history. Tours and visitor arrangements can change, so confirm current details with the site before setting out.[7]
Fort Huger
This James River historic park interprets a Civil War-era fortification built as part of the defenses intended to block approaches to Richmond. Its setting makes the visit as much about the river landscape as the earthworks; check local sources for current access details.[8]
Fort Boykin Historic Park
Explore a James River site with a long defensive history. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources identifies the archaeological site as part of Fort Boykin Historical Park; confirm current park access and conditions before visiting.[9]
Windsor Castle Park
In Smithfield, this town park offers a green-space complement to a downtown history walk. Check the Town of Smithfield’s parks information for current amenities, access and any notices affecting trails or facilities.[10]
History and character
The county’s roots reach back to the colonial period. The Isle of Wight County Historical Society traces its establishment to 1634, when it was known as Warrosquyoake Shire, and says the name Isle of Wight was adopted in 1637. The region’s earlier history includes the Warraskoyack, Nansemond and Nottoway peoples, whose presence predates English settlement.[11][12]
The county’s heritage can be read across different kinds of places: the historic townscape of Smithfield, church and courthouse sites, riverfront fortifications and museum exhibits. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources lists numerous county properties and archaeological sites on its historic-register page, including Fort Boykin and the Old Isle of Wight Courthouse.[13]
Planning a visit
Begin in Smithfield, where the visitor center can provide local information and help you decide which historic sites, museums or outdoor stops fit your schedule. A compact visit can focus on Main Street and the county museum; a longer outing can add a church or riverfront historic park.
Check official attraction and town websites before traveling. Opening times, tours, park access and facilities may vary, and some historic sites require advance arrangements. For current visitor information, consult the Town of Smithfield and the official tourism listing for Smithfield and Isle of Wight County.[14][15]
