The county’s best-known historic stops include the Hanover courthouse complex, Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown, Polegreen Church, and battlefield sites connected to Richmond National Battlefield Park. Across these sites, the county’s story encompasses Indigenous communities, colonial-era religious and political debate, and the upheaval of the Civil War.[3]
Plan a trip to Hanover County
Why visit Hanover County?
Hanover is a rewarding stop for travelers interested in how Virginia’s history is written into its landscapes. A courthouse village, a preserved home associated with Patrick Henry, and battlefields crossed by walking trails make it possible to explore several different periods in one trip. The county’s visitor offerings also include outdoor recreation, farms, local events, and family attractions; check the official tourism listings for current options and seasonal programming.[4]
What to see and do
Visit the historic courthouse district, whose focal point is the arcaded courthouse dating to about 1737–42. Across the road, the district also includes Hanover Tavern; check with local sites before planning an interior visit or tour.[5]
Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown
This preserved home is associated with Patrick Henry, who lived at Scotchtown from 1771 to 1778. Find current tour and access information through the site before visiting.[6]
Polegreen Church
The former Hanover Meeting House was the base of Presbyterian minister Samuel Davies, whose preaching influenced Patrick Henry. The church was destroyed during the fighting near Cold Harbor in 1864; the site is maintained by the Historic Polegreen Church Foundation. Confirm public access and programs in advance.[7]
Cold Harbor battlefield
Explore a major Civil War landscape within Richmond National Battlefield Park. The National Park Service describes a driving tour and walking trails among original entrenchments; grounds, facilities, and visitor-center schedules can vary, so check current park information before setting out.[8][9]
County museum exhibits explore Hanover’s history and cultural stories. Its current visitor hours and holiday or weather closures are subject to change; confirm directly before a visit.[10]
History and character
Hanover County was formed from New Kent County in 1720. Long before that colonial boundary was drawn, Indigenous communities including the Pamunkey and Chickahominy lived in the region along its rivers and waterways.[11][12]
The courthouse district became a stage for colonial legal and political debate. In 1763, Patrick Henry argued the Parson’s Cause case at Hanover Courthouse. Nearby Polegreen Church recalls the religious dissent and ministry of Samuel Davies, a leader of the Great Awakening in the South whose sermons helped shape Henry’s oratory.[13][14]
In 1864, the county’s roads and crossroads became part of the Overland Campaign. The Battle of Cold Harbor included a costly Union assault on June 3, followed by days of confrontation along fortified lines. Today, battlefield paths and preserved earthworks offer a way to read the terrain alongside the historical record.[15][16]
Planning a visit
Hanover County covers a broad area, so plan a route around the particular sites you want to see rather than expecting the courthouse, Scotchtown, and battlefield locations to be a single walkable district. A car is useful for connecting the county’s dispersed attractions. The Cold Harbor visitor center and battlefield grounds have separate operating details; check the National Park Service’s current hours and conditions before traveling. For museum schedules, site tours, seasonal farm experiences, and local events, consult the county and official tourism websites before departure.[17][18]
