From Virginia.wiki

Type
Riverside town and trail access point

Setting
North bank of the New River

Known for
New River Trail, Fries Dam and old-time music

Pronounced “freeze,” Fries sits on the north bank of the New River in Grayson County, Virginia, about 15 miles northeast of Independence on Route 94. Its compact streets and river setting reflect the town’s origins as a company community built around a textile mill; today, visitors come for the trail, river recreation and local music. [1]

Fries is especially appealing to travelers who like outdoor time with a strong sense of local history. The Fries trail access connects to the New River Trail State Park, while the dam and former mill-town streets offer a glimpse of the industry that shaped the community. For a different kind of outing, check the town’s official calendar for music jams, concerts and seasonal events; schedules can change, so confirm details before traveling. [2][3]

Why visit Fries?

Fries brings together a working-river landscape and the history of a planned mill town. The New River is the town’s defining feature, and the trailhead makes Fries a natural starting point for a walk or ride along the river corridor. Back in town, the dam, historic buildings and community music scene give visitors reasons to linger beyond the trail.

The town is also a useful base for a relaxed Southwest Virginia outing: walk or bike, spend time by the water, and look for a local jam or event. There’s no need to plan a packed itinerary; Fries’ character is best experienced at an unhurried pace.

What to see and do

Walk, bike or ride horseback on the former railroad corridor. The Fries access is at the trail’s southern end, with the route continuing toward Fries Junction and the wider state park trail system. Check current maps and conditions before setting out. [4][5]

Fries Dam and the New River

The dam at Bartlett Falls was built to provide power for the mill that helped establish Fries. The river and dam remain a striking reminder of the town’s industrial beginnings; enjoy the view from public areas and follow posted safety guidance around the water. [6]

Historic Fries Theatre and music

The community-run theatre hosts Thursday night old-time and bluegrass jams, along with concerts, dances and other events. The town’s music page also describes exhibits relating to Fries musician Henry Whitter and the early recording era. Confirm the current calendar before making plans. [7]

Riverside Park

This town park beside the New River includes a playground, open space and a covered stage, according to the town’s visitor information. Check the town site for current access details and any event-related changes. [8]

Fries TRACK Trail

A family-oriented, self-guided route follows a scenic stretch of the river, with activity materials about local nature and history. Virginia State Parks describes the trail as 1.4 miles one way; check the park’s current information for access and conditions. [9]

History and character

Fries took shape around water-powered industry. Colonel Francis Fries saw potential in the New River and backed the development of a dam and mill at Bartlett Falls. Construction began in 1901, and Washington Mills Company built housing and other facilities for a new mill community. The mill began operating in 1903, and the town grew around it. [10]

The company town included worker housing, a depot, commercial buildings and larger homes for management. The Fries Boarding Houses, built for mill workers around 1905, are listed on the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places. They are private dwellings, so visitors should respect property boundaries and view historic buildings only from public places. [11]

The textile mill ceased operations in the late 20th century. The river corridor and repurposed rail route now draw visitors, while regular music gatherings keep a community tradition visible. The town’s official history and visitor pages give slightly different dates for the mill’s closure; the broad story is the transition from mill-centered industry to a community shaped by outdoor recreation, heritage and local events. [12][13]

Planning a visit

Fries is reached by road via Route 94, with the New River Trail access in town. The trail is a multi-use state park route; choose a distance and activity that suit your group, and review the latest park map for open sections, conditions, fees and facilities before departure. [14]

For music, check the Historic Fries Theatre and town events listings before visiting, especially if a particular jam, concert or festival is the focus of your trip. The town’s official visitor page maintains information about local lodging and dining; businesses’ availability and hours can change, so confirm directly before setting out. [15][16]
