TOWN IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA

Clifton, Virginia

A small Fairfax County town where a historic railroad village, independent shops and restaurants make for an unhurried Northern Virginia outing.

Type
Historic town

Setting
Southwestern Fairfax County

Known for
Historic district, Main Street and Clifton Day

Clifton is a compact historic town in southwestern Fairfax County, Virginia, an appealing change of pace from the busy Washington suburbs. Its central streets are lined with older homes, shops and places to eat; the town’s historic district preserves the character of a village shaped by the railroad and its early-20th-century growth.[1]

Come for a leisurely walk, a meal, or a seasonal community event rather than a packed itinerary. Clifton’s historic buildings are largely part of a living residential community, so enjoy the streetscape from public areas and respect private property. The town and regional tourism office publish visitor and event information; confirm current details before setting out.[2][3]

Why visit Clifton?

Clifton’s draw is its scale and atmosphere: a few historic blocks that invite a slow wander, with local businesses and a streetscape that feels distinct from the surrounding suburbs. The Clifton Historic District is listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The state’s historic-register entry describes a village that developed around the railroad and preserves the appearance of an early-1900s community.[4]

A visit works well as a short outing: stroll the center, browse shops when open, and plan a meal or a nearby winery stop. Clifton Day, the town’s annual fall festival, adds a larger event-day reason to visit, but its date, transport arrangements and program vary; check current official announcements before making plans.[5]

What to see and do

Walk the historic center

Take in the village streetscape, including older homes, churches and the former railroad setting. Many historic properties are private residences; the Virginia Department of Historic Resources advises visitors to respect owners’ privacy and view buildings from public rights-of-way.[6]

Browse local shops and dine

Clifton’s small commercial center includes locally operated shops and eateries. Businesses may keep their own schedules, so check directly for current opening times and reservations. Visit Fairfax highlights the town’s independent shops, cafés and dining as part of its visitor offering.[7]

Look for railroad-era landmarks

The town began as a railroad settlement, and its historic identity remains closely tied to the line that helped spur its growth. The Town of Clifton’s history page describes the community’s origins as Devereux Station and identifies local landmarks for a self-guided look around town.[8]

Plan around Clifton Day

The annual festival brings vendors, food and entertainment to the historic town. Virginia Railway Express has provided special train service for the event in past years; check the current event and transit information, since dates, schedules and arrangements can change.[9]

Make a winery detour

Paradise Springs Winery is a nearby option beyond Clifton’s central streets. Visit Fairfax includes it among places to explore in the Clifton area; check the winery’s own site for current visitor policies, reservations and hours before going.[10]

History and character

The town grew around the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. During the Civil War, the rail line had military importance; after the war, development around the depot helped establish the village. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources dates Clifton’s development as a community to the period from 1868 to 1910 and notes the role of railroad-related commerce, a hotel, shops and other local institutions.[11]

The settlement was first known as Devereux Station; the town’s official visitor page says it became Clifton Station in 1868 and later took the shorter name Clifton. The town was incorporated in 1902. Its historic district was added to the Virginia Landmarks Register in April 1985 and the National Register of Historic Places in August 1985.[12][13]

Today, Clifton’s historic center is also a residential neighborhood. That mix gives the town its intimate scale, while calling for considerate sightseeing: admire the architecture and streets from public space rather than entering private properties.

Planning a visit

Clifton is best approached as a short, flexible outing. Allow time to walk the central streets, and check in advance which shops and restaurants are open on the day you plan to visit. The Town of Clifton maintains visitor, history and calendar information; schedules and event details can change.[14][15]

Clifton Day is a particularly busy occasion compared with an ordinary visit. Check the festival’s current information and any Virginia Railway Express service notices before traveling; special service for the festival is not the same as a regular daily stop.[16]
