Why go
For Virginia travelers looking for an Atlantic-coast getaway beyond the state line, Cape Hatteras offers a different kind of beach trip: a long chain of low, changing barrier islands, with ocean shoreline on one side and broad sounds on the other. The National Park Service describes the islands as shaped continually by wind, waves, currents, storms and changing sea levels. [3]
The park suits travelers who want more than a day on the sand. Depending on conditions and access, a visit can include a lighthouse, beach walks, wildlife watching, fishing, paddling, camping or simply following NC-12 through the island landscape. Beach access and road conditions can change, so check the park’s current information before setting out. [4][5]
Highlights
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
The black-and-white lighthouse stands near Buxton, roughly midway along the seashore. The present tower was completed in 1870. The NPS says it will not open for climbing in 2026 because of restoration work; confirm the latest visitor information before planning around access. [6]
Ocean and sound sides
The barrier islands place Atlantic beaches and calmer sound-side waters within the same coastal landscape. Swimming, paddling and other activities depend on local conditions and current access; check park guidance before heading out. [7]
History and character
Cape Hatteras National Seashore was authorized by Congress in 1937 and established on January 12, 1953. The National Park Service describes it as the nation’s first national seashore. Its protected coastal setting is not static: barrier islands migrate and change through erosion, shoreline buildup, overwash and the opening or closing of inlets. [10][11]
The lighthouse reflects the hazards of the coast. Congress authorized the first lighthouse at Cape Hatteras in 1794; the first tower was lit in 1803. The current lighthouse was completed in 1870, and the NPS records that it was moved 2,900 feet in 1999 after concern about beach erosion. Offshore, Diamond Shoals and the meeting of ocean currents contributed to the area’s reputation as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” [12]
Planning a trip
From Virginia, the NPS’s northern approach runs via I-64 or I-664 to Chesapeake, Route 168 into North Carolina, then US-158 east through Nags Head to NC-12. The park’s northern entrance is at the junction of US-64 and NC-12 in Nags Head. The NPS also lists Norfolk International Airport as about 100 miles north of the seashore. [13]
Allow time for the drive and for island conditions to affect plans. NC-12 can be vulnerable to ocean overwash, and beach routes and access points may be temporarily restricted. Check NPS road, beach-access and closure updates before departure. If visiting the lighthouse, note that climbing is not scheduled to resume in 2026 during restoration; verify current status with the park. [14][15][16]
