James River recreation and historic landscapes
Buckingham County is a rural Central Virginia destination best explored at an unhurried pace: follow the James River, spend time outdoors, and make room for a stop at the historic courthouse village. The county’s strongest visitor draws include James River State Park and the Buckingham Court House Historic District, where a 19th-century streetscape preserves a vivid sense of the county’s past.[1][2]
Plan around the experience you want: river access, trails and camping at the state park, or a slower drive through the county seat and its historic district. Rural distances and changing park or attraction schedules make it sensible to check official sources before setting out.

Why visit Buckingham County?
Buckingham County offers a quieter, outdoors-first alternative to Virginia’s larger visitor hubs. The James River is central to the experience, with state-park access for hiking, biking, paddling, fishing and camping. The landscape also carries a long relationship with river travel: batteaux—shallow-draft boats once used to move goods along Virginia’s rivers—are interpreted at James River State Park and celebrated in special programming.[3][4]
History-minded visitors can walk or drive through Buckingham Courthouse, a small county-seat village whose courthouse district includes buildings associated with local civic life in the 19th century. The village’s landmark courthouse was rebuilt after an 1869 fire; the district’s surviving buildings and setting make the stop as much about place and architecture as a single monument.[5]
What to see and do
Spend time along the James River on the park’s multi-use trails, or plan a paddle, fishing outing or overnight stay. Park facilities include a visitor center with nature and history exhibits; check the official park page for current access, programs, fees and reservations.[6]
Buckingham Court House Historic District
Explore the county-seat village’s courthouse-centered historic landscape. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources notes that the district was established in 1818 and that its courthouse was rebuilt in 1873 after a fire. Some historic properties are private; view them respectfully from public rights-of-way.[7]
Batteaux heritage on the James
Learn about the shallow-draft boats that carried goods on Virginia rivers. James River State Park interprets batteaux and notes that a replica is displayed at its visitor center; occasional heritage events bring river history to life. Event dates and details vary, so verify the current calendar before traveling.[8][9]
Historic sites across the county
The state historic-register listing for Buckingham County includes the Buckingham Court House Historic District and other properties, including churches, houses and archaeological districts. Treat the register as a research and route-planning resource, not a guarantee that listed properties are open to visitors.[10]
History and character
Buckingham Courthouse village was established in 1818, originally as Maysville. A courthouse was built nearby, and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources describes a later courthouse completed in 1822 as the state’s first temple-form, porticoed courthouse. After that building burned in 1869, the courthouse was rebuilt in 1873 along similar lines. The surrounding historic district includes court-related buildings, dwellings and a church, preserving the village’s courthouse-centered character.[11]
The James River is another defining thread in the county’s story. Its waters shaped travel and commerce, while today the river corridor supports recreation and interpretation. The batteau tradition offers a tangible connection between the river’s working past and contemporary heritage events.[12][13]
Planning a visit
A car is useful for exploring this rural county and connecting its river, park and historic sites. James River State Park is in Buckingham County; its official page lists recreation, facilities, directions and current visitor information. Check that page before traveling for program schedules, fees, reservations and any access updates.[14]
For a history-focused stop, allow time to look around Buckingham Courthouse village, but remember that some properties in historic districts are private and not open to the public. The Department of Historic Resources recommends respecting property owners and viewing sites from public rights-of-way where appropriate.[15]
