Bloxom, Virginia

From Virginia.wiki

Type
Incorporated town

Known for
Railroad and agricultural history

Bloxom is a small town in central Accomack County, Virginia, on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. It is best approached as a quiet stop for travelers interested in the region’s railroad-era communities and agricultural past, rather than as a destination with a large visitor-attraction district. The town’s own history traces its growth to the railroad’s arrival in 1884 and to the post office named for its first postmaster, William Bloxom.[1]

Bloxom’s appeal lies in its local story and its setting among the Eastern Shore’s farms and small towns. There is no official visitor guide or attractions directory identified for the town; for broader trip planning, the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission’s visitor information covers destinations and experiences across the region.[2]

Why visit Bloxom?

Bloxom offers a glimpse of a working, inland Eastern Shore community whose early growth was closely tied to rail transport and produce shipping. Visitors can use it as a base for a short local-history stop while exploring the wider region, including nearby towns, coastal landscapes, and wildlife destinations.

The town is not promoted as a major sightseeing center, so plan with modest expectations: its value is in the everyday character of a small town and the history behind its streetscape. Check regional tourism resources before setting out for specific attractions elsewhere on the Shore.

What to see and do

Notice the railroad-town story

Bloxom’s growth followed the railroad’s arrival in 1884. The town history recalls the station-era commercial district and the old depot, which a former resident remembers as having later been moved to Cape Charles. The historical account is useful context for understanding how rail connections shaped communities across the Shore.[3]

Use Bloxom as one stop on a wider Eastern Shore drive. The regional tourism organization provides a destination map and trip-planning resources for towns and experiences across the peninsula; confirm details directly before visiting individual sites.[4]

History and character

The railroad’s arrival in 1884 helped turn Bloxom into a local center of trade. According to the town’s history, the town square was rented to the railroad, and the post office—and later the town—took the name of William Bloxom, the first postmaster. By the early twentieth century, the business district included a general store, restaurant, hotel, brick kiln, and other businesses.[5]

The same local account describes a period of commercial activity in the late 1930s and 1940s, including a doctor’s office, barbershop, hardware and feed store, banks, and grocery store. Bloxom opened its own school in 1931. The town history gives 1951 as the year of incorporation; Virginia’s published charter record documents incorporation by order of the Accomack County Circuit Court on April 20, 1953, illustrating that local histories and formal legal records may describe different steps in the process.[6][7]

The town’s historic identity is connected to the wider agricultural and transportation history of the Shore. The University of Virginia’s digital project on the railroad and the Eastern Shore documents Bloxom as a railroad station and collects references to it in nineteenth-century local newspapers.[8]

Planning a visit

Bloxom is a small community rather than a visitor center with a published sightseeing itinerary. Check the town’s official website for current municipal information, and consult regional tourism resources when planning activities elsewhere on the Eastern Shore.[9][10]

The Town of Bloxom lists its office at 26129 Shoremain Drive, Bloxom, Virginia 23308. Its posted office hours are limited and may change, so confirm current arrangements before relying on an in-person visit.[11]
