The view from the tower
The lookout sits at about 3,405 feet on Walker Mountain. Its 100-foot tower lifts visitors above the tree line for views across the surrounding mountains and valleys; the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources notes that, on a clear day, peaks in five states can be seen.[3]
The tower is the main draw, but the scenery starts before the climb. The official lookout page describes farmland to the north and Jefferson National Forest to the south. Views depend on visibility, so allow a little time to take in the landscape rather than planning the stop around a guaranteed panorama.[4]
Store, crafts and seasonal events
The BW Country Store at the lookout sells regional handmade crafts and local foods, including fudge, jams and relishes, according to the Southwest Virginia destination organization. It also describes weekend music and artisan demonstrations during the warmer months; schedules and offerings can vary, so check ahead if a particular event is part of your plan.[5]
The lookout has operated since 1947, and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources says it has been run continuously by the Kime family. The tower and store make this a compact visit: pair the climb and browsing with a scenic drive or nearby outdoor stop rather than expecting a large attraction complex.[6]
Birdwatching and nearby scenery
Walker Mountain is a useful place to watch for migrating hawks and other birds. The state wildlife trail site lists possible sightings that include bald and golden eagles, kestrels, peregrine falcons and several hawk species; sightings are not guaranteed, and seasonal movement makes timing relevant.[7]
For a longer outing, the Big Walker Mountain Scenic Byway passes through forest and mountain scenery and connects the area with routes near Wytheville and Bland. The regional tourism organization also describes Monster Rock Trail and the Big Bend Picnic Area as nearby stops along the byway; check local information for current conditions and access before making them part of the itinerary.[8]
Plan your visit
Big Walker Lookout is at 8711 Stoney Fork Road, Wytheville, Virginia, on the Wythe–Bland County line. Regional visitor information gives access from the Wytheville or Bland area via U.S. Route 52, with connections from Interstate 77 and Interstate 81.[9]
The state wildlife-trail listing notes on-site parking and restrooms, but advises visitors to check the site’s website for additional information before visiting. The attraction’s online tower page still displays prices labeled “2021,” so those figures should not be treated as current admission rates. Confirm whether the tower and store are open, the day’s hours, fees and any access limitations directly with the lookout before traveling.[10][11]

Big Walker Lookout works well as part of a Southwest Virginia trip. Nearby bases and regional guides include Wytheville, Virginia, Bland County, Virginia and Southwest Virginia. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Virginia's Blue Ridge Highlands offer broader routes for travelers extending their drive.
