Known for
Railroad-era history and a historic town center
Belle Haven is a compact community on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, straddling the line between Accomack and Northampton counties. Most of the incorporated town lies in Accomack County. Rather than a destination of major visitor attractions, Belle Haven is best approached as a quiet stop for a closer look at the Shore’s small-town history and landscape.[1]
The town’s story reaches back to a settlement along a former stagecoach road, where a tavern and a baker’s oven served travelers. In the late 19th century, the railroad helped bring new activity to the community. Today, the county describes its historic core as a mix of commercial buildings, homes, churches, and cemeteries; visitors can use Belle Haven as a brief, low-key pause on a wider Eastern Shore drive.[2]
Plan a trip to Belle Haven
Why visit Belle Haven?
Belle Haven offers a glimpse of an Eastern Shore community whose character was shaped by travel and trade: first along the stagecoach road, and later through rail and steamboat connections. Its appeal is less about a single marquee attraction than about the town’s setting, its historic streetscape, and its place in the wider story of the Shore’s railroad towns.[3][4]
What to see and do
Explore the historic center
Take in the town’s small commercial district and surrounding residential streets from public roads. Northampton County describes the historic area as including commercial buildings, homes, churches, and cemeteries. These are community places, not necessarily visitor attractions; respect private property and posted access notices.[5]
Follow the railroad story
The railroad’s arrival on the Eastern Shore in the 1880s helped spur the growth of Belle Haven and neighboring communities. The Northampton County landmarks trail gives context for how rail connections changed local work, movement, and trade across the region.[6]
Plan a wider Eastern Shore outing
Belle Haven works well as one stop on a broader trip. The regional tourism organization’s visitor guide and trip-planning resources cover towns and experiences throughout Virginia’s Eastern Shore.[7]
History and character
The settlement grew along a former stagecoach road north of present-day Exmore. Northampton County’s account says an 18th-century settler named Bell built a residence and a large oven, selling baked goods to travelers; the community was first known as Bell’s Oven. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources’ county survey records the early use of the name “Belhaven” in a 1762 will and describes a tavern called Bell Haven by 1774. The village developed around its taverns and served as a post-office community by 1826.[8][9]
Transportation reshaped the town over the next century. Although an earlier railroad route bypassed Belle Haven, the Eastern Shore Railroad’s arrival in 1884 and steamboat traffic helped the community develop. Rail service also contributed to the emergence of other Eastern Shore towns, as farmers and watermen used stations to move produce and seafood. Belle Haven was incorporated in 1895, according to the town’s current charter in the Code of Virginia.[10][11]
The county line is part of Belle Haven’s identity as well as its history. The town crosses the boundary between Accomack and Northampton counties, though most of its incorporated area is on the Accomack side. The county’s account also notes that the community’s historic fabric includes residences, churches, cemeteries, and a small commercial center.[12]
Planning a visit
Belle Haven is a small-town stop rather than a full-service visitor hub. For broader trip planning, consult the Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission’s current guide and regional resources. Confirm details for any specific business or site before setting out, as visitor access and operating information can change.[13]
The town lies in two counties, so local civic information may be handled by different county offices. Northampton County notes that town elections are conducted through Accomack County because most of the incorporated town lies there; contact the relevant county or town office for current municipal information.[14]
