Bear Creek Lake State Park is a compact, outdoors-focused escape in central Virginia, about an hour west of Richmond. Its 40-acre lake is the park’s centerpiece, with a swimming beach, fishing pier, boat launch and seasonal rentals; cabins, camping, picnic areas and trails make it possible to turn a day trip into a longer stay. [1]
The park also opens onto the much larger Cumberland State Forest, so a visit can combine time by the water with hiking, biking or horseback riding. Weekends and holidays can be busy: the park warns that day-use parking may fill, and entry is not guaranteed when capacity is reached. Check the official park page for current conditions, fees, reservations and seasonal services before setting out. [2]
Plan a trip to Bear Creek Lake State Park
Why visit Bear Creek Lake State Park?
The appeal is variety without a long drive between activities: swim or fish at the lake, take a trail through the woods, then settle in for a picnic or an overnight stay. The forest setting gives the park a quieter, more rustic feel than a resort-style lake destination, while cabins, campsites and group facilities provide options for different kinds of trips. [3]
Start here
For a first visit, head toward the lake. The swimming beach, fishing pier, boat launch and picnic facilities make the waterfront the natural starting point. If you plan to paddle or rent a boat, check the park’s current rental information: services are seasonal and may change. [4]
Before hiking or riding, consult the current park trail guide and map. The mapped routes include short park trails as well as longer connections into the state forest; the Cumberland Multi-use Trail is designated for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Download a map ahead of time if you expect to be beyond the main park area. [5]
What to see and do
Swim and relax by the lake
Spend time at the swimming beach or enjoy a lakeside picnic. Swimming is unguarded, so visitors should review the park’s current swimming guidance and supervise children closely.
Fish or paddle
The lake has a fishing pier and boat launch, and the park lists boat rentals among its activities. Rental availability is seasonal; check current operations before planning around it.
Explore the trails
Walk the park’s woodland and lakeside routes, or use the trail guide to plan a longer outing. Trail options in the adjoining forest include routes for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Try the archery range
Archery is among the park’s listed recreation options. Ask the park about current range access, equipment and any scheduled instruction before visiting.
Stay overnight
Choose from cabins and camping options, including facilities for groups. Reservations are recommended; check the park’s lodging page for availability, booking conditions and what to bring.
History and significance
Bear Creek Lake began as a lake and recreation project of Virginia’s State Forestry Division. The park’s official history says the lake was built in 1938 by local workers seeking employment, along with pavilions, a concession stand and fireplaces. The land was transferred to the Division of State Parks in 1940 and operated as a day-use recreation area; campgrounds were added in 1962, when it became Bear Creek Lake State Park. [6]
The park remains closely connected to the surrounding Cumberland State Forest, where public trails extend the experience beyond the lakeshore. That pairing of a small recreation lake with a much broader working forest is central to the park’s character. [7]
Planning a visit
The park is at 22 Bear Creek Lake Road in Cumberland, about 4.5 miles northwest of the town of Cumberland. The official directions lead from U.S. Route 60 via Route 622 and Route 629. DCR cautions that some GPS routes from the west may use a gravel section of Oak Hill Road; follow the park’s current directions instead. [8]
The park lists daily hours of 8 a.m. to dusk and requires a daily parking fee. Day-use visitors should consider arriving early on weekends and holidays, when the park may reach capacity. Hours, fees, closures and seasonal services can change, so verify details with Virginia State Parks before travel. [9]
Cabins and campsites can be reserved through Virginia State Parks; the park advises making overnight reservations in advance. Cabin guests should note that linens are not provided. Check specific stay requirements, current availability and check-in instructions when booking. [10]
