Barrier Islands Center

From Virginia.wiki

The Barrier Islands Center is a free-admission museum and cultural center in Machipongo, on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Its exhibits, artifacts, and films tell stories of the families who lived on the barrier islands and the coastal life shaped by land and water. It makes a useful stop for understanding the region before exploring its towns and shoreline. [1]

What the center tells

The museum interprets the history and culture of the Eastern Shore’s barrier-island communities, including the islanders’ work and daily life. Its collection includes more than 7,500 artifacts, displayed to share stories of people who lived, worked, and played on the islands. [2]

The islands are part of a shifting coastal landscape of sand, marshes, and lagoons. The center offers a mainland perspective on communities that no longer live on the islands and on the relationship between Eastern Shore people and the water. [3]

Exhibits and films

Exhibits use artifacts and detailed scenes to interpret island life. The museum’s displays include material connected with the Cobb Island Hotel and Hog Island traditions. [4]

Documentary films and gallery videos offer another way to encounter the region’s history, including for visitors who cannot use the upstairs galleries. Check with the center for current exhibit and film offerings. [5]

Plan your visit

The center is at 7295 Young Street in Machipongo, on the western side of Route 13. Its driveway entrance is on Young Street. The official visitor page places it between mile markers 90 and 91, about 20 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and 10 miles south of Exmore. [6]

The center currently lists hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and free admission. Hours and holiday closures can change, so confirm current details with the museum before setting out. [7]

Families, groups, and accessibility

The center describes itself as family-friendly and lists children’s activities, including building blocks, a fossil pit, and croquet on the lawn. Picnic tables and benches are available on the Quarter Kitchen patio; visitors may bring snacks or lunch. Confirm current arrangements directly with the center. [8]

Group tours can be arranged in advance and customized to a group’s interests. The center also offers educational field-trip programs for school groups. [9]

Ramps provide access to the Museum and Education buildings, but many exhibits are upstairs and the second floor is not wheelchair accessible. The center says visitors unable to climb the stairs can use an upstairs gallery-tour video, documentary films, or an iPad virtual tour. Contact the center to discuss access needs before visiting. [10]
