Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay beaches offer a different kind of coastal day: look across open water, wander sandy shoreline or settle in at a city beach with family amenities. Public options range from staffed summer swimming at Hampton’s Buckroe Beach to the unguarded state-park beaches at First Landing and Kiptopeke. The sites have different rules and facilities, so check with the managing city or park before setting out—especially for swimming conditions, seasonal services and access. [1][2]

Why go

The Bay’s shoreline suits a relaxed beach day as much as a swim. Depending on where you go, you can pair time on the sand with a walk, picnic, birdwatching, fishing or a visit to a park. The experience varies: Buckroe Beach is a staffed municipal beach in season, while the state parks offer beach access alongside trails and natural coastal habitats.

Keep in mind that “public beach” does not mean every shoreline is a designated swimming area. Virginia State Parks says swimming at its Chesapeake Bay beaches is unguarded and at visitors’ own risk; First Landing also cautions that there are no designated swimming areas at the Narrows or boat launch. [3][4]

Highlights

In Virginia Beach, explore 1.5 miles of sandy Chesapeake Bay frontage alongside trails, maritime forest and wetland habitats. Swimming is at your own risk, with no lifeguards.

Use the Eastern Shore as a starting point for Kiptopeke State Park, where two Bay beaches sit among coastal trails, boardwalks and bird habitat.

Buckroe Beach & Park

Hampton’s Bayfront beach has a boardwalk, playground, pier, restrooms and picnic facilities. The city lists lifeguard service during the summer beach season; check its current schedule and rules before visiting.

Kiptopeke State Park

On the Eastern Shore, the park has two unguarded Chesapeake Bay beaches. The northern beach is designated for swimming seasonally; the south beach has different permitted uses, including fishing, crabbing and boating. Confirm current rules before entering the water.

[5][6][7]

History and character

The Bay is both a working waterway and a natural coastal landscape. At First Landing State Park, the shoreline meets maritime forest, lagoons and cypress swamp; the park also interprets the area’s history of water travel and settlement. Kiptopeke, on the Eastern Shore, is known for its coastal habitat and position along a major migratory-bird flyway. Together, the parks offer more than a place to swim: they are places to experience the Bay’s landscapes and wildlife. [8][9]

Planning a trip

  • **Choose the kind of beach day you want.** Buckroe Beach has city amenities and seasonal lifeguard service. First Landing and Kiptopeke are state-park settings, with unguarded swimming and additional outdoor recreation.
  • **Check the rules for the specific shore.** Kiptopeke’s north and south beaches have different use rules; at First Landing, swimming is at your own risk, and swimming is not advised at the Narrows.
  • **Confirm current conditions before leaving.** Hours, swimming availability, lifeguard schedules, fees, parking and facilities may change with the season or weather. Check the official city or park information on the day of your visit.
  • **Pack for an exposed shoreline.** Bring water, sun protection and footwear suited to sand and boardwalks. Follow posted safety guidance and leave wildlife and natural features undisturbed.

The Hampton city page lists the beach as open sunrise to sunset and lifeguard service during the summer season; seasonal dates, hours and restrictions should be verified before visiting. [10]
