Colonial port history, oysters, and boating
Urbanna is a compact waterfront town on Urbanna Creek, near the Rappahannock River. Its appeal is a mix of colonial-era landmarks, a walkable historic center, and a present-day connection to boating and seafood. The town’s historic district records its evolution from an 18th-century tobacco port to a 19th-century commercial and fishing center and, later, a summer resort.[1]
Visitors can explore the town on foot, stop at the museum and visitor center in the historic James Mills Scottish Factor Store, or come by water to the town marina. Urbanna is especially lively during the annual Urbanna Oyster Festival; its 2026 edition is scheduled for November 6–7. Confirm current museum, marina, and festival details with the official sources before setting out.[2][3]
Plan a trip to Urbanna
Why visit Urbanna?
Urbanna offers a quieter, small-scale way to experience Virginia’s Tidewater history. The town’s streets and waterfront reflect centuries of trade and working life on the Chesapeake’s tributaries, while its compact layout makes a short walking visit practical. Its signature annual gathering, the Urbanna Oyster Festival, brings the town’s oyster and seafood traditions into focus.
The setting is also part of the draw: Urbanna Creek, the Rappahannock River, and the nearby Chesapeake waterways make the town a natural stop for boaters as well as road travelers. The town operates a transient marina at Upton’s Point on Urbanna Creek; check its current services and seasonal information before visiting by boat.[4]
What to see and do
Visit the restored James Mills Scottish Factor Store, an 18th-century building that now houses the town museum and visitor center. The town identifies it as the home of the Mitchell Map; check the museum’s current opening schedule before planning a visit.[5]
Historic streets and landmarks
Walk the Urbanna Historic District to see a mix of early buildings and later homes, churches, and commercial structures. Notable landmarks include the Old Middlesex County Courthouse, Lansdowne, the Old Tobacco Warehouse, and Sandwich. Many historic properties are private; enjoy those visible from public streets without entering private grounds.[6]
Museum in the Street Walking Tour
Follow the town’s self-guided heritage route, which uses historic markers and online videos to introduce Urbanna’s port history and landmarks. Printed guides are available through the town; check its visitor information for current tour details.[7]
Urbanna Creek and the town marina
Upton’s Point provides a waterfront base for visiting boaters, with town-listed transient slips and marina amenities. The marina is a short walk from downtown, but seasonal hours and services can change; confirm directly with the town before arrival.[8]
Urbanna Oyster Festival
The town’s best-known annual event celebrates oysters and local culture with festival activities, food, and parades. The 2026 festival is scheduled for November 6–7; consult the official festival website for the latest program, access, parking, and traffic information.[9]
History and character
Urbanna’s origins lie in Virginia’s colonial port-town system. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources describes it as established in 1680 and notes that it served as a tobacco port in the 18th century. Its location on Urbanna Creek connected inland plantations and farms to trade by water.[10]
The Old Middlesex County Courthouse is one of the town’s most distinctive historic sites. The courthouse building was constructed in the 18th century and later served other community uses; the county seat eventually moved away from Urbanna. Today, it remains a landmark within the historic district, alongside homes and commercial buildings from several periods.[11]
Urbanna’s economy and identity continued to follow the water as shipping changed from colonial tobacco vessels to steamboats and seafood work. The town’s historic landscape and current boating life make that continuity easy to appreciate during a walk between downtown and the creek.[12]
Planning a visit
Urbanna is a small town best explored at an unhurried pace: allow time to walk the historic center, visit the museum if it is open, and enjoy the waterfront. For the self-guided tour, check the Town of Urbanna’s current directions and guide information. Historic district properties may be privately owned, so stay on public streets and respect residents’ privacy.[13][14]
The Oyster Festival is held in November and substantially changes the scale and traffic of a visit. For the 2026 festival, the official site lists November 6–7; check it for current schedules, parking arrangements, traffic restrictions, and any fees before traveling. Marina hours and museum opening days are seasonal, so verify those details directly with the town as well.[15][16][17]
