Why visit Salem?

Salem suits travelers who like to mix local history and outdoor time without committing to a large-city itinerary. Downtown gives the visit a sense of place: the farmers market, historic buildings, and the Salem Museum help tell the story of a community that took shape in the early 19th century. Nearby parks and greenways offer a change of pace, while the Salem Civic Center and surrounding sports complex draw visitors for games, tournaments, and performances.[5][6]

What to see and do

Salem Museum & Historical Society

Start with Salem’s own story at a museum devoted to the city and surrounding area. The museum is next to Longwood Park; check its official visitor page for current opening days, hours, and any weather-related changes before visiting.[7]

Historic downtown and walking tour

Explore downtown’s historic streets and buildings at your own pace, or use the city’s historic walking-tour information to plan a more focused look at Salem’s changing streetscape and local landmarks.[8]

Roanoke College

The college’s Salem campus adds a student-town feel to the city. Its online historical tour highlights campus traditions, buildings, and institutional history; check with the college for current guidance on in-person campus visits.[9]

Lake Spring Park and Longwood Park

Lake Spring Park offers a small, scenic pause near downtown, while Longwood Park has an amphitheater and shelters. The city lists both among its local walking and recreation destinations; check municipal information for current park conditions and event details.[10]

Roanoke River Greenway and Blueway

For time outdoors, look into the Roanoke River Greenway, whose Salem section connects with the wider valley trail network, or the Roanoke River Blueway for water-based recreation. Check local maps and conditions before choosing a route or launching a boat.[11]

Salem Farmers Market

At Main and Broad streets, the market is a downtown stop for locally produced food and seasonal vendors. Its days, hours, and offerings vary by season; confirm the latest information with the city before visiting.[12]

Salem Civic Center and sports complex

The Civic Center hosts a changing program of events, and the surrounding complex includes football and baseball venues. Check the official event calendar and venue information for current schedules, ticketing, access, and visitor policies.[13]

Seasonal events

Salem’s event calendar includes the annual Salem Fair and sporting events at city venues. Dates and arrangements change from year to year, so use the city’s current event listings to plan around a specific fair, game, or performance.[14]

History and character

Salem’s history reaches back beyond its recorded town origins: the city’s historical account notes archaeological evidence of human presence in the area thousands of years ago and describes a 1671 expedition that encountered a Totera (Tutelo) village near the Roanoke River. In the 18th century, Andrew Lewis became one of the best-known early settlers in the area; the town of Salem was laid out in 1800, and a land sale on June 4, 1802, is treated as its establishment. Salem received its first charter in 1806.[15]

The Great Road, river commerce, the county seat, Roanoke College, and the arrival of the railroad in 1852 helped the town develop as a regional center. Salem’s railroad infrastructure was a target during the Civil War, when Union forces raided the town in 1863. Roanoke College, which moved to Salem in 1847, remains an important part of the city’s identity. Salem became an independent city in 1967, and its modern calendar and visitor profile are strongly tied to civic events and sports venues.[16][17]

Planning a visit

Salem works well as a day trip or as part of a broader Roanoke Valley stay. A simple itinerary might combine the museum and downtown with a walk at Lake Spring Park or Longwood Park; visitors with more time can explore sections of the greenway or plan around a scheduled event.

The city is accessible from Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460. Individual attractions and events have their own schedules, policies, and access arrangements, so check the official site for each place before traveling. The Salem Museum publishes its current visitor information online, and the Civic Center maintains event and venue information for ticketed activities.[18][19]
