Patrick Henry's Red Hill
More actions
Patrick Henry’s Red Hill is the historic estate near Brookneal where the Revolutionary-era orator and Virginia governor spent his final years. Today, visitors can explore the house, law office, museum, burial ground, and other historic features while learning about the people and history connected to the site. Red Hill is in the countryside of southern Virginia, so check the official visitor information before setting out.[1]
Why visit
Patrick Henry lived at Red Hill from 1794 until his death in 1799. The estate interprets this final chapter of his life and his place in Virginia’s revolutionary history through its historic grounds and museum.[2]
The site’s story reaches beyond Henry. Red Hill’s history includes Indigenous communities and African Americans who lived and labored there. The site’s interpretation describes archaeological evidence of Indigenous life in the area, and identifies an African American cemetery in the woods west of the visitor center.[3]
What to see
General admission includes the historic grounds, outbuildings, Henry family cemetery, Quarter Place, and museum. The visitor center and museum shop are open to the public without a grounds admission ticket, according to the site’s frequently asked questions.[4]
The house, law office, kitchen, and other features help visitors picture the estate during Henry’s lifetime. The law office is an original building; the house and some other historic structures were reconstructed during the site’s restoration.[5]
The museum and grounds are best approached as a connected visit rather than a single-house stop. Red Hill recommends allowing an hour or more; the official FAQ describes the included attractions and explains that admission is required to enter the grounds.[6]

The official visit page lists admission prices and says general tickets can be purchased upon arrival. Group visits have advance-booking requirements. Because prices and arrangements may change, check the current details before your visit.[9]
Red Hill says golf carts are available for visitors with disabilities on the main historic grounds. The visitor center is accessible, but the site notes steps at several historic buildings; consult its accessibility information when planning a visit around mobility needs.[10]
