Why visit the Museum at the Historic Courthouse?

This is a compact stop for travelers interested in courthouse architecture, community history, or genealogy. Rather than presenting a courthouse as a relic alone, the museum brings together the historic courtroom, exhibit rooms, and research resources in the building that once served as Campbell County’s seat of justice.[3]

Start here

Begin in the classic courtroom, described by the county as the museum’s centerpiece. Then explore the exhibit rooms and ask staff about the genealogical resource room if you are researching Campbell County people or places. Museum tours and research assistance are offered by Historical Society members and volunteers during the listed public hours.[4]

History and significance

The courthouse served as Campbell County’s seat of justice for more than a century, from 1848 to 1991. After its courthouse role ended, the building took on a new use as a historic site and educational center. Its central courtroom remains a focus of the museum, while adjoining rooms accommodate exhibits, a gift shop, and genealogical resources.[5]

The Campbell County Historical Society manages the museum. The county reports that restoration and improvement work began in 2013 and included work on the courthouse’s columns and cupola, accessibility improvements, updated building systems, and repairs to interior and exterior finishes.[6]

Planning a visit

The county currently lists the museum as staffed on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with tours of the exhibit rooms and local or family-history research assistance available. Because schedules and programming may change, confirm current opening details before traveling.[7]

The address is 774 Village Highway, Rustburg, Virginia 24588. For current visitor information, contact the museum at (434) 616-2222 or email cchsva@gmail.com.[8]
