Why visit Middleburg?
Middleburg suits travelers who like to combine a stroll through a historic town with a taste of the surrounding countryside. The compact downtown brings together historic buildings, independent boutiques, cafés and restaurants, while the wider area is known for horse farms, equestrian events, wineries, breweries and a craft distillery. [4]
The town’s appeal is not limited to its sporting heritage. Middleburg’s history includes African American community institutions and leaders, including John Wesley Wanzer, who helped organize a local NAACP branch and supported efforts toward equal educational rights. The area’s story is best approached as a layered one—visible in historic streets and buildings as well as in the communities that shaped them. [5]
What to see and do
Walk the historic center
Take in Middleburg’s tree-lined streets, brick sidewalks and varied historic buildings. The Middleburg Historic District is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Historic-register properties may be private homes, so enjoy them from public rights-of-way and respect residents’ privacy. [6]

Shops, galleries and food
Washington Street and nearby blocks offer boutiques, galleries, specialty shops, cafés and restaurants. Browse at an unhurried pace, then consult the Town’s current shopping and dining guide for business listings and a map. [9]
Country roads and equestrian culture
Beyond downtown, the surrounding Loudoun countryside is associated with horse farms, stone-walled lanes, vineyards, breweries and distilleries. Equestrian events and seasonal festivals add to the calendar; check organizers’ official pages for dates, tickets and travel arrangements. [10]
Trails and outdoor time
The Town highlights public nature trails at The Hill School’s arboretum, reached by a pedestrian bridge near the end of South Pendleton Street. Confirm current access conditions with the Town or property before you go. [11]
History and character
Middleburg was established in 1787 by Leven Powell, a Revolutionary War officer and Virginia political figure. Its name reflects its position midway along the route between Alexandria and Winchester, then an important travel corridor known as the Ashby’s Gap Turnpike. The town first grew as a coach stop and later as a commercial center for the surrounding region. [12][13]
The Civil War brought cavalry action to the area, and the town’s postwar history included both hardship and change. In the 20th century Middleburg became increasingly associated with equestrian life and sporting traditions. Its historic district preserves a mix of late-18th- through early-20th-century buildings, with tree-lined streets and brick sidewalks helping retain the scale of the old town. [14]
Middleburg’s heritage also includes the history of its African American residents and institutions. Local landmarks and community history connect to the Freedmen’s Bureau, Asbury Methodist Church, Shiloh Baptist Church, and the work of residents such as John Wesley Wanzer. Visit Loudoun’s African American history guide offers a route through some of these places and stories. [15]
Planning a visit
Middleburg is best explored on foot once you reach the historic center; shops, dining and several museums are clustered within town. The Town’s visitor page links to a current shopping and dining guide and information about activities. Museum schedules vary, so check official attraction websites before traveling, especially if a particular collection or guided visit is central to your plans. [16]
The National Sporting Library & Museum is at 102 The Plains Road. Its published visitor information lists hours, admission and directions; verify current details directly before visiting. The town’s museum listings also include smaller institutions with their own opening schedules. [17][18]
Seasonal events can draw visitors and affect local travel. For festivals, races and parades, consult event organizers for confirmed dates, ticketing, parking, road closures and any shuttle information. If you plan to explore rural roads or visit wineries and breweries, check each venue’s visitor policies and arrange transportation appropriate to your itinerary.
