Marion is the county seat of Smyth County, in Southwest Virginia. Its compact Main Street and surrounding historic district preserve the look of a late-19th- and early-20th-century county center, while nearby Hungry Mother State Park adds lake, woodland and trail recreation. The town is also a convenient place to pause along U.S. Route 11 or make a base for exploring the surrounding mountains.[1][2]

A visit can pair a downtown stroll and a performance at the Lincoln Theatre with time outdoors at the park or a drive on Virginia Route 16. The theater, built in 1929 and restored as a regional cultural center, is known for its distinctive Mayan-inspired interior. For current show listings, park conditions and seasonal facilities, check the relevant official sites before setting out.[3][4]

Why visit Marion?

Marion works well for travelers who want a small-town downtown, local history and outdoor time in one stop. Main Street puts historic buildings, the Lincoln Theatre and the Smyth County Museum within an easy downtown itinerary; Hungry Mother State Park is a short drive away for lake and mountain recreation. The town is also a natural jumping-off point for exploring Smyth County and the broader Southwest Virginia region.[5][6]

What to see and do

Make time to see this restored 1929 theater, recognized for its Mayan-inspired decorative interior and role as a regional cultural center. Check the theater’s official calendar for current performances and visitor information.[7][8]

Downtown Marion and the historic district

Walk Main Street to take in the town’s commercial and civic architecture. The Marion Historic District includes residential, commercial and institutional buildings that reflect the town’s growth as Smyth County’s political, industrial and commercial center. The local historical society has developed a self-guided downtown history walk; check its site for the current map and museum details.[9][10]

Spend time on the wooded trails or by the park’s mountain lake. The state park lists hiking and biking, boating, fishing, swimming, camping and lodging among its recreation and visitor options; seasonal availability and conditions can vary, so check current park information before visiting.[11]

Back of the Dragon

Virginia Route 16 forms a mountain drive between Marion and Tazewell known as the Back of the Dragon. The regional tourism organization describes the route as 32 miles, crossing three mountain ranges and passing Hungry Mother State Park. It is a winding mountain road: check local conditions and choose a pace and vehicle suited to your trip.[12]

History and character

Marion’s roots as a county seat date to the formation of Smyth County in 1832. The town was established as the county seat that year, and its position near roads, the Middle Fork Holston River and rail transportation helped it grow into a local political and commercial center. The surviving historic district includes buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.[13][14]

The Lincoln Theatre is among the town’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in 1929, it combined a movie-palace setting with an unusual Mayan-inspired decorative scheme and murals depicting American and local history. After closing in 1977, the building was purchased by the Lincoln Theater Foundation and restored for use as a regional cultural center.[15]

Planning a visit

Marion’s downtown is suited to a walk, with Main Street’s historic buildings, theater and museum close together. Hungry Mother State Park has its own facilities, trails and seasonal offerings; check the official state park page for current hours, fees, trail information, swimming and boat-rental availability, and lodging details. Confirm the Lincoln Theatre’s calendar and box-office information if a show is central to your visit.[16][17]

For local history, the Smyth County Historical Society & Museum is in downtown Marion and offers a self-guided walking-tour resource. Verify current opening arrangements and tour-map availability with the museum before visiting, as schedules may change.[18][19]
