Known for
Caledon State Park, heritage trails, river landscapes, and Dahlgren history
King George County sits at the western gateway to Virginia’s Northern Neck, between the Potomac River to the north and the Rappahannock River to the south. Its appeal is a mix of wooded trails, open river scenery, and small-scale heritage stops rather than a single historic downtown or large resort destination.[1]
For an easy introduction, walk a section of the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail, visit Caledon State Park, or follow the county’s Native American Heritage Trail and GeoTour. Local museums and interpretive routes add context on Indigenous history, the Navy’s presence at Dahlgren, and the county’s place in the story of the 1865 Lincoln assassination.[2][3]
Plan a trip to King George County
Why visit King George County?
King George is a good fit for travelers who want outdoor time alongside local history. The Potomac and Rappahannock shape the county’s landscape, while its heritage sites tell stories that range from Native American communities and colonial settlement to the modern naval research facility at Dahlgren.[4]
The county’s visitor experience is spread out: parks, trail access points, museums, and historic locations are reached by road rather than gathered in one walkable center. Plan a few stops around a particular interest—hiking and wildlife, heritage interpretation, or river views—and check official visitor and park information before setting out.
What to see and do
Explore wooded paths, marshland, and Potomac River scenery in a park known for its old-growth forest and bald eagle habitat. Trail conditions, programs, visitor-center schedules, and fees can change; confirm current details with Virginia State Parks before visiting.[5]

This driving route follows parts of John Wilkes Booth and David Herold’s flight through the region after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, connecting interpretive locations in King George with sites beyond the county. Check the visitor guide for route details and current site access.[9]
History and character
King George County was formed from Richmond County in 1720, as residents of the area faced long journeys to the Richmond County courthouse. Its boundaries were adjusted in 1777; the county’s position between two major rivers has remained a defining feature of its geography and history.[10]
The region was home to Native American communities before English settlement. The county’s heritage trail, developed with the University of Mary Washington and in collaboration with the Rappahannock Tribe and Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia, offers visitors a way to encounter Indigenous perspectives through interpretive signs and geocache stops.[11]
The county also has connections to national political history. James Madison was born at Port Conway, and the King George Historical Society recounts George Washington’s family ties to the area. In 1918, the Navy established a proving ground at Dahlgren; the facility’s development became a lasting part of the county’s modern history and identity.[12][13]
Planning a visit
King George County is best explored by car, with time allowed to travel between park entrances, trail access points, museums, and river communities. Choose a main focus for the day, such as Caledon’s trails or a history-focused drive, and check the official destination and attraction pages for directions, access rules, events, and seasonal schedules.
Outdoor access details, visitor-center hours, fees, and programs can change. Virginia State Parks posts current information for Caledon; county tourism provides trail and heritage-route guidance. Some county heritage experiences use multiple dispersed stops, so review the route or brochure before departure.[14][15]
