Henricus Historical Park brings visitors to the James River site of the 1611 English settlement of Henricus, the colony’s second settlement after Jamestown. Its re-created buildings and interpretive areas explore both the English town and the Virginia Indian community of Arrohateck that was there before the settlement’s founding.[1]
Walk among reconstructed colonial structures, visit the Arrohateck village interpretation and take in the park’s views over the James River. The site is outdoors, so allow time to explore on foot; the park’s visit information describes a self-guided experience that commonly takes two to three hours. Check the official county listing before setting out for current admission, operating hours, closures and program details.[2]

Why visit Henricus Historical Park?
Henricus offers a place-based introduction to the early colonial period and the people whose lives and land were affected by English expansion. Rather than presenting only a town reconstruction, the park interprets the Arrohateck community as well as English settlement life, making the relationship between the two central to a visit.[3]
The location also connects settlement history with the James River landscape. The bluff, historic grounds and surrounding Dutch Gap area give visitors a sense of why this stretch of river mattered for travel, defense and daily life.
Start here
Begin at the visitor facilities and check which areas, demonstrations or interpretation are available on the day of your visit. The site is largely an outdoor walk, so comfortable shoes, water and weather-appropriate clothing are useful. The county advises visitors to allow about two to three hours to explore and notes that the historic-site entrance may close before the park’s listed closing time; confirm current details before arrival.[4]

History and significance
The Arrohateck, a Virginia Indian group within the Powhatan Chiefdom, lived in the area before the English established Henricus. In 1611, Sir Thomas Dale moved upriver from Jamestown and founded Henricus on Farrar’s Island, naming it for Prince Henry. The settlement was intended as a fortified town and a new center for the colony.[5]
Henricus became part of the history of Virginia Indian–English relations, which included coercion, cultural change and armed conflict. Pocahontas was brought to Henricus after her capture and was baptized there under the name Rebecca. On March 22, 1622, Henricus was among the English settlements attacked in the uprising led by Opechancanough; the settlement was subsequently abandoned. The present park interprets this history through reconstructions and educational programming, while the historic site is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places.[6][7]
Planning a visit
Henricus Historical Park is at 251 Henricus Park Road in Chester. County-published visitor information lists the historic site as open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and notes that it closes on Chesterfield County holidays. Admission information and operating arrangements may change, so verify current details with the county or park before traveling. The county also advises that the last entrance to the historic site may be earlier than closing time.[8]
Expect to spend much of the visit outdoors on paths between interpreted areas. During warmer weather, bring water, sun protection and insect repellent. School field trips and scheduled programs may affect the feel of a visit; check the park’s official events and visitor information if you are planning around a particular activity or hoping for a quieter walk.[9]
