Chippokes State Park pairs outdoor time on the James River with a deep agricultural history. The property has been farmed since 1619; today, visitors can explore its historic area, formal gardens and Farm and Forestry Museum, as well as hike, bike, picnic or stay overnight. It lies in Surry County, across the river from historic Jamestown.[1]

A visit can be as brief as a walk along the river or as full as a museum visit, mansion tour and trail outing. The park’s grounds are listed as open daily from dawn to dusk, but museum and mansion access, programs, and overnight facilities have their own schedules and arrangements. Confirm current details with the park before you go.[2]

Why visit Chippokes State Park?

Chippokes brings together a working-farm landscape, historic buildings and river-edge recreation. Its significance reaches beyond the mansion: the grounds tell a layered story of agriculture, landholding and enslavement in Tidewater Virginia. The park’s interpretive offerings and historic sites provide ways to encounter that history alongside the natural setting.[3]

It also works well for different kinds of visits. You can focus on the museum and historic area, follow a trail through woods and fields, or make a longer stay at the campground or in park lodging. Check the park’s current notices for what is open and what requires a reservation.

Start here

Begin at the visitor center, then choose whether to head toward the historic area or the trails. College Run Trail is a paved 1.2-mile route connecting the visitor center with the historic area along the James River; it is designated for hikers and bicyclists. Other routes include trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, with conditions that may be muddy after wet weather.[4][5]

If the museum or mansion is a priority, check its current hours and tour schedule before planning your route. The Farm and Forestry Museum is an open-air complex, and its official page notes that weather or collection care can affect access to exhibit buildings.[6]

What to see and do

Explore the Farm and Forestry Museum

See exhibits on farming and domestic life in Virginia, then take the short Forestry Trail walk to view a 1930s portable sawmill. The open-air museum’s hours and access can vary; check its official page before visiting.[7]

Visit the Jones-Stewart Mansion and gardens

The mansion, built in 1854, anchors the park’s historic area. Explore the grounds and formal gardens; mansion tours are scheduled offerings, so confirm dates and availability with the park.[8][9]

Walk, bike or ride the trails

The trail system crosses wooded areas and farm fields. College Run Trail is a paved 1.2-mile route for hikers and bicyclists; other trails include options for horseback riding. Check the trail guide for route uses and conditions.[10]

Take in the James River shoreline

The park’s river setting offers places to picnic and enjoy the water’s edge. Fishing is permitted from the James River shore and College Run Creek with a valid Virginia fishing license; there is no designated swimming area.[11]

Stay overnight

The park offers campground sites and overnight lodging, including cabins. Availability, seasonal requirements and rates vary, so check the official lodging page or reservation service before making plans.[12]

History and significance

A land grant to William Powell in 1619 is the earliest recorded English ownership associated with Chippokes. Farming continued on the property through successive owners and generations. The present Jones-Stewart Mansion was built in 1854, during the plantation’s antebellum period.[13]

That history includes enslavement. Virginia State Parks’ grounds guide explains that enslaved people lived and worked at Chippokes during the centuries when slavery was legal, while also noting that historical records provide limited information about individual lives and families. The guide identifies historic structures and interpretive areas on the mansion grounds; visitors can use it to understand the site with care and context.[14]

The Farm and Forestry Museum connects the property’s long agricultural history with changing tools, techniques, crops and regional forestry. Its exhibits include a portable sawmill associated with former owner Victor Stewart and the area’s timber industry.[15]

Planning a visit

  • Location: 695 Chippokes Park Road, Surry, Virginia. The park is in Surry County, on the south side of the James River.
  • Hours: The park grounds are listed as open daily from dawn to dusk. Office, museum, mansion and program hours differ; confirm current schedules before traveling.[16]
  • Museum: The Farm and Forestry Museum lists seasonal self-guided hours on its official page. Because it is open-air, weather and collection-care needs may affect access.[17]
  • Trails: Review the official trail guide for permitted uses and routes. Wet weather can make grass-covered trails muddy.[18]
  • Water access: Fishing requires a valid Virginia fishing license. The park does not have a designated swimming area; consult the official park page for boating and launch information.[19]
  • Getting there: The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry connects Jamestown and Surry and can be part of a route to the park. Check current ferry service and driving directions before setting out.[20]
  • Fees and reservations: Parking, programs, shelters and overnight stays may involve fees or reservations. Confirm current costs, availability and park notices through Virginia State Parks.
