Blue Ridge Music Center

From Virginia.wiki

At Milepost 213 on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Galax, Virginia, the Blue Ridge Music Center brings mountain music into view and earshot. Explore the free Roots of American Music Museum, catch a daytime performance when the center is open, or plan around a summer amphitheater concert. The National Park Service operates the site, with musical programming coordinated through a partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.[1][2]

What to see and hear

The Roots of American Music Museum uses interactive exhibits and local artists’ stories to trace the musical traditions of the region and their influence on folk, rock, and popular music. The visitor center also has a theater and gift shop, and National Park Service rangers can help with Parkway information.[3]

On days the center is open, Midday Mountain Music offers free live performances by local and regional musicians in the covered breezeway, generally from noon to 3 p.m. The summer concert series brings performers to the outdoor amphitheater; dates and ticket details vary, so check the event calendar before making plans.[4][5]

Trails and time outdoors

The grounds include two hiking routes: the easy 1.35-mile High Meadow Trail and the moderate 2.24-mile Fisher Peak Loop. The Fisher Peak Loop is also part of the Kids in Parks TRACK Trail program. Check trail information and conditions before setting out.[6]

The center is a good place to break up a Parkway drive with music, exhibits, or a walk. The National Park Service lists Galax, Virginia about 10 miles away and identifies Interstate 77 and Virginia Route 89 as nearby access roads.[7]

Planning your visit

The visitor center and museum operate seasonally, generally from May into fall. Opening dates and weekly schedules can change from year to year; confirm current hours before driving out. The official site lists free admission to the visitor center and museum, while amphitheater concerts may require tickets.[8][9]

For Parkway navigation, use Milepost 213 rather than relying on a GPS device to recognize the milepost address. The National Park Service recommends checking Parkway road closures and using a map before travel. The center itself has no lodging or dining options, so plan meals and overnight stays in nearby communities.[10][11]

Concertgoers should check the event listing for the night’s admission details and accessibility information. The center’s FAQ notes that seating is first come, first served and suggests bringing a lawn chair or blanket; policies and arrangements may vary by event.[12]

Music heritage

The center celebrates the living musical traditions of the Blue Ridge, including bluegrass, old-time, folk, Americana, country blues, and gospel. Its museum connects the region’s musical history with traditions shaped by influences from Europe and West Africa, while performances give visitors a chance to hear music made and carried forward locally.[13]

The Music Center is also a major venue on The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, linking the visit to a wider Southwest Virginia tradition of music, performers, and community venues.[14]
