Virginia’s Eastern Shore is a narrow peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic, and its beaches reflect both sides. Cape Charles is a town beach on the Bay, with access along Bay Avenue; Kiptopeke State Park offers a park setting and a designated swimming beach; and the Virginia district of Assateague Island National Seashore brings visitors to the Atlantic barrier-island coast near Chincoteague. These aren’t interchangeable beach days: choose between a town waterfront, a state-park outing and a more natural island setting, then check the relevant agency’s current conditions before you go.[1][2][3]

Why go

The Eastern Shore suits travelers looking for a coastal visit with more than one pace and landscape. On the Chesapeake side, Cape Charles has a public beach beside town streets and waterfront amenities. Kiptopeke makes a beach visit part of a state-park day, with trails and other outdoor recreation nearby. Farther north, the Virginia side of Assateague pairs ocean shoreline with a protected coastal landscape; its beach access is reached through the Chincoteague area, not by driving across the island from Maryland.[4]

That variety makes it possible to shape a trip around the experience you want: a simple waterfront stroll, a swim-and-trails outing, or a visit to a barrier island where wildlife and changing coastal conditions are part of the setting.

Highlights

Walk the public Chesapeake Bay waterfront along Bay Avenue, with beach access at the ends of the blocks. The county describes the beach as a place for swimming and sunbathing, with access points, a pavilion and public restrooms. Confirm current facilities and any beach advisories before traveling.

Choose a state-park beach day on the Chesapeake Bay, or combine the shoreline with park trails and other recreation. DCR identifies a northern swimming beach and a separate southern beach; rules and permitted activities differ by area.

Visit the Virginia district’s recreational beach through the Chincoteague-area approach. This is an Atlantic barrier-island setting, with access, conditions and wildlife protections to check before setting out.

History and character

The shore’s beaches sit within a landscape shaped by water, working waterfronts and changing coastlines. Cape Charles’s public beach is part of a town waterfront, while Kiptopeke’s shoreline is incorporated into a state park with habitat and recreation areas. Assateague is a barrier island shared by Maryland and Virginia; the National Park Service notes that the island’s two districts have separate road entrances, with no vehicle access between them on the island itself.[5]

These settings call for different expectations. A town beach is close to Cape Charles’s streets and waterfront; a state-park visit can include trails and facilities; and a barrier-island visit depends on access routes, seasonal conditions and care around wildlife. At Assateague, the Virginia district is managed as part of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, while the National Park Service provides recreational beach services there.[6]

Planning a trip

  • **Pick the coast that fits your day.** Cape Charles and Kiptopeke are on the Chesapeake Bay; Assateague’s Virginia district is on the Atlantic-facing barrier island.
  • **Check beach conditions before swimming.** Access, advisories, facilities and seasonal services can change. Kiptopeke describes its swimming beaches as unguarded and says swimming is at visitors’ own risk; check the park’s current guidance before arrival.[7]
  • **Use the correct Assateague entrance.** For the Virginia district, follow directions for the south entrance near Chincoteague. The Maryland and Virginia entrances are not connected by a road across Assateague Island.[8]
  • **Allow for seasonal and day-to-day changes.** The National Park Service posts current conditions and alerts, including beach and access updates. Check them close to your visit, especially during the busy season.[9]
  • **Respect protected shorelines.** Follow posted rules, stay clear of closed areas and give wildlife space. Bring water and any food you need, particularly for a barrier-island visit where services are limited.[10]
