Railroad history and Claytor Lake
Dublin is a small town in Pulaski County, Virginia whose story is closely tied to the railroad and the region’s transportation routes. Founded around a railroad depot in 1854, it grew into a commercial center; today, the town’s historic district and nearby Claytor Lake State Park offer visitors a mix of local history and outdoor recreation.[1]
For many visitors, Dublin works best as a relaxed stop or a base for days on the water and around the New River Valley. Why visit Dublin?
Dublin brings together a compact historic town center and easy access to lake recreation. Its pace is quieter than the region’s college towns, while its location makes it a practical starting point for exploring the broader New River Valley. Regional visitor information highlights the valley’s outdoor opportunities, including the New River, Appalachian Trail, and Claytor Lake.[3]
What to see and do
Spend time on the lake or explore the park’s trails and historic Howe House. The park lists boating, swimming, fishing, camping, cabins, and other facilities; confirm current availability and fees before setting out.[4]
Dublin Historic District
Take a respectful look around the town’s historic core. The district includes the 1913 Norfolk and Western Railway depot and a mix of commercial and residential buildings; many historic properties are private, though some can be viewed from public streets.[5]
Howe House
At Claytor Lake State Park, the historic Howe House serves as the visitor center, with exhibits about the lake’s ecology and surrounding area. Check the park’s official information for current visitor-center details.[6]
History and character
Dublin took shape in 1854, when the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad established a depot at its crossing with the Giles and Pulaski Turnpike. Its position made the settlement a center of transportation and commerce. During the Civil War, the rail connection served as a Confederate supply link, and the area was affected by the 1864 Battle of Cloyd’s Mountain.[7]
The historic district’s earliest buildings date to the mid-19th century, while many others were built from the postwar period through the 1920s. The railroad depot remains a notable landmark in a town whose historic streets retain a modest, small-town scale.[8]
Planning a visit
Dublin is most rewarding when paired with time outdoors at Claytor Lake or a wider New River Valley itinerary. The state park is accessible from Interstate 81 via Exit 101 and State Park Road. Park services, recreation, and seasonal operations can change, so consult Virginia State Parks directly for current conditions, fees, and reservations before visiting.[9]
When exploring the historic district, remember that many buildings are privately owned homes and are not open to visitors. Stay on public streets and respect residents’ privacy.[10]
