Battleship Wisconsin and Hampton Roads Naval Museum

Nauticus is a maritime discovery center on the downtown Norfolk waterfront, exploring the sea’s influence on the natural world, industry and military history. Its campus brings together interactive museum exhibits, the Battleship Wisconsin, a sailing center and the schooner Virginia—making it an engaging stop for families as well as visitors interested in ships and naval history.[1]

The centerpiece is the Wisconsin, one of the last and largest battleships built by the U.S. Navy. General admission includes museum exhibits and the ship’s outdoor decks; some interior areas are available only on guided tours. Allow at least one to two hours for the museum and battleship, and check Nauticus’s current hours, ticket details and tour availability before setting out.[2][3]

Why visit Nauticus?

Nauticus makes the working waterfront part of the experience: visitors can move from hands-on exhibits about maritime life and technology to the decks of a full-size battleship, with Norfolk Harbor just outside. It’s a distinctive way to connect the region’s present-day port and naval presence with the broader story of the sea.[4]

The attraction also suits different interests within one visit. Children can explore interactive spaces and marine-life displays, while ship enthusiasts can spend time aboard the Wisconsin or visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, located inside Nauticus and operated by the U.S. Navy.[5][6]

Start here

Begin with the museum’s floor map and decide how to divide your time between the exhibit floors and the battleship. The map lists hands-on spaces such as Design, Build, Sail!, Our Port and The Lab, along with the Aquaticus and aquarium areas. Displays and programming can change, so use the current map and daily-program listings to check what is available during your visit.[7]

If the ship is your priority, check whether a guided tour is running and reserve ahead if you want access beyond the public decks. Nauticus lists tours focused on the ship’s topside, command areas and engine spaces; each requires a general-admission ticket, and availability is limited.[8]

What to see and do

Explore the museum exhibits

Use the exhibit floors to explore maritime subjects through interactive displays and activities. The current floor map includes areas such as Our Port, Design, Build, Sail! and The Lab.

Walk the decks of the Battleship Wisconsin

Go aboard the historic battleship and explore the outdoor decks included with general admission. The ship offers a close-up look at the scale and layout of a major U.S. Navy warship.

Take a guided battleship tour

Optional guided tours explore areas beyond the regular public route, with themes including the ship’s topside, command spaces and engine room. Check the current tour schedule and access details before visiting.

Visit the Hampton Roads Naval Museum

Located on Nauticus’s second floor, this U.S. Navy museum interprets the history of the Navy in the Hampton Roads region through exhibits and artifacts.

See Aquaticus and the aquarium

The museum map identifies Aquaticus and an aquarium on the third floor. Check the current map for their locations and any changes to exhibits.

Look into sailing programs

Nauticus’s campus includes Sail Nauticus, a community sailing center, and the schooner Virginia. Check Nauticus’s official site for current sailing experiences and schedules.

History and significance

Nauticus opened in 1994 as a maritime center on Norfolk’s waterfront. The site reflects the city’s long connection to the sea, from commercial shipping and shipbuilding to the U.S. Navy’s presence in Hampton Roads.[9]

The Wisconsin adds a large, tangible chapter of naval history to the museum visit. The Iowa-class battleship served in World War II, the Korean War and the Gulf War; it is now berthed beside Nauticus. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum, housed within the building, provides further context on the region’s naval history and is an official U.S. Navy museum.[10][11]

Planning a visit

Nauticus is at One Waterside Drive in downtown Norfolk. Its official site currently lists regular hours as Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Mondays closed; hours and admission details can change, so confirm them directly before traveling. The site also encourages advance ticket purchases.[12][13]

General admission includes the museum exhibits and outdoor decks of the Wisconsin. Guided ship tours are an additional experience and require a general-admission ticket; check the official ticket page for current prices, tour options, restrictions and availability. Nauticus advises allowing at least one to two hours for the museum and battleship, though a longer visit may suit visitors taking a tour or exploring the exhibits in detail.[14][15]

The waterfront location puts Nauticus near downtown parks, dining and other attractions. For driving directions and parking information, consult Nauticus’s current visitor information; parking arrangements and rates may vary.[16]
