Getting around
Downtown on foot; a car helps for trails and scenic drives
Roanoke makes it easy to pair a downtown day with time outdoors: browse the historic city market, visit art and railroad museums, then head up Mill Mountain for trails and a view over the valley. The city grew alongside the railroads, and that history remains part of its character, while the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and regional trail network make it a practical base for exploring the mountains.[1][2]

Why go
Roanoke suits travelers who want a manageable city visit with mountain scenery close at hand. Downtown concentrates the market, galleries, cultural venues and several museums; Mill Mountain and the wider area add hiking and biking options. The result is a destination where you can build a trip around one interest or mix a little of everything without treating the city and outdoors as separate itineraries.[3]
Highlights
Browse the long-running open-air market and its Market Square setting. It began in 1882, and the surrounding district remains a natural starting point for a downtown wander.[4]
Make time for changing exhibitions and American art in a distinctive downtown museum. Check the museum’s current exhibitions, hours and admission information before you go.[5]
Explore transportation history in a former freight station, with exhibits spanning rail, automobiles and aviation. Its locomotive collection reflects the region’s close ties to railroading; confirm current exhibits and visitor details with the museum.[6]
Center in the Square
This downtown cultural complex brings several family-friendly museums and attractions together, including a science museum, children’s museum and pinball museum. Individual venues may have different schedules and admission arrangements, so check before planning a visit.[7]
Visit the Roanoke Star and take in the city-and-valley outlook, or explore the park’s trails. The mountain is also home to the Mill Mountain Zoo and the city’s Discovery Center; check park information for current conditions and access details.[8]
Greenways and trails
Roanoke’s trails and greenways offer ways to walk, cycle and connect with local parks. Choose a route to suit your time and ability, and consult the city’s current maps and trail notices before setting out.[9]
History and character
Before it was Roanoke, the settlement was known as Big Lick. The arrival and junction of railroads in the late 19th century drove rapid growth: the city says the Shenandoah Valley Railroad’s connection with the Norfolk and Western in 1882 marked the beginning of that expansion, and Roanoke became an independent city in 1884.[10]
Rail heritage is still easy to encounter in the city’s museums and historic downtown. The market, meanwhile, grew from a municipal market established in the 1880s; today, its central location helps connect a visit to nearby shops, restaurants and cultural attractions.[11]
Planning a trip
Start downtown if you want to visit the market, museums and galleries on foot. Allow more time if you plan to add Mill Mountain or other outdoor destinations, and check official attraction and park pages for current hours, admission, trail conditions, closures and access before leaving. Details can change, especially around events and maintenance.
Roanoke has a downtown Amtrak station on the Northeast Regional route. Train schedules and service can change, so confirm the current timetable directly with Amtrak. For travel around the wider area, consult local transportation and visitor information; some trailheads and scenic destinations are easier to reach by car.[12][13]
