HISTORIC BUILDING · COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG

Governor's Palace

The Governor's Palace was the Williamsburg residence of Virginia's royal governors and later its first governors after independence.[1]

Overview

The palace represented royal authority, political power, and elite life in colonial Virginia. Colonial Williamsburg notes that the residence housed lieutenant governors, royal governors, Virginia's first elected governors, servants, and enslaved people. The present building is a reconstruction based on historical and architectural research.

The site or trade forms part of the broader interpretation of Colonial Williamsburg, the restored Historic Area in Williamsburg, Virginia.[2]

What to notice

Visitors encounter furnished state rooms, domestic spaces, gardens, and interpretation addressing both government and the people whose labor supported the household. The Palace Green also provides one of the Historic Area's most recognizable vistas.

Historical context

Buildings in the Historic Area are interpreted within the political, economic, social, and domestic life of eighteenth-century Williamsburg. Some structures are original survivors, while others are reconstructions created from documentary, archaeological, and architectural evidence. Visitors should consult Colonial Williamsburg's current schedule because access, tours, and programming can change.

Visiting context

This subject is best understood as part of the larger Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area. The main Colonial Williamsburg guide provides an overview of major sites, museums, trades, dining, and visitor information.
