At the southern end of [[Virginia's Eastern Shore]], this refuge protects a varied landscape of woodlands, grasslands, salt marsh, beach and ponds. Its position on the Delmarva Peninsula makes it an important resting place for migrating birds and insects; the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service reports more than 400 bird species in the area and highlights fall migration as a major seasonal spectacle.<ref>{{Cite web
Begin at the refuge’s visitor center, just north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Short trails offer an easy introduction to the landscape, while the Wise Point Boat Ramp provides access to the water. The visitor center currently lists Friday-through-Sunday hours, but schedules and access can change, so check the refuge’s official page before setting out.<ref>{{Cite web
== Why visit the refuge? ==
This is a rewarding stop for wildlife watching without needing a full-day hike. Its appeal is the combination of migration-season birding, coastal scenery and accessible walking routes, all close to the southern gateway to the Eastern Shore. In autumn, migrating songbirds, monarch butterflies and raptors pass through the region; sightings vary with weather and season, so bring binoculars and allow time to look carefully.<ref>{{Cite web

The refuge is also more than a wildlife stop. Its trails interpret land shaped by earlier military use, and a former bunker is among the features noted on the refuge trail map. The setting gives visitors a sense of how conservation, local history and the geography of the peninsula overlap.<ref>{{Cite web
Make the visitor center your first stop for orientation, exhibits and current information about conditions. The refuge lists its visitor center at 32205 Seaside Road, Cape Charles, and currently describes indoor wildlife viewing and interactive exhibits; confirm opening days and hours before traveling, especially outside the listed schedule.<ref>{{Cite web
For a first walk, follow one of the short refuge trails shown on the official map. The Wildlife Trail and Butterfly Trail are each marked at about a half-mile; the map also identifies a marsh overlook, historic cemetery and bunker overlook. Check posted signs and current refuge guidance, as wildlife protection or site conditions may affect access.<ref>{{Cite web
== History and significance ==
The refuge was established in 1984 to conserve habitat used by migrating wildlife. Its mix of coastal and inland environments—woodlands, shrublands, grasslands, salt marsh, beach and freshwater and brackish ponds—supports a range of species and makes the southern tip of the peninsula a significant stopover during migration.<ref>{{Cite web
}}</ref>

Before becoming a refuge, portions of the land were used for military purposes, including Fort John Custis and the Cape Charles Air Force Base. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s comprehensive conservation plan describes the removal of former structures after the refuge was established and the return of much of the developed land to vegetation. Today, the trail map’s bunker and historic features offer glimpses of that layered past alongside the refuge’s conservation mission.<ref>{{Cite web
== Planning a visit ==
The visitor center address is 32205 Seaside Road, Cape Charles, Virginia. The refuge’s current page lists the center as open 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday; visitor information is subject to change, so confirm hours, trail conditions and facility access with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service before leaving. The refuge phone number is 757-331-2760.<ref>{{Cite web
}}</ref>

Allow time to stop at the visitor center and walk a short trail; birders and photographers may want longer, especially during migration. Bring water, sun protection and binoculars, and stay on marked routes to avoid disturbing wildlife. For the latest trail layout, consult the refuge’s official map. The Southern Tip Bike and Hike Trail offers an additional paved route extending north from the refuge area; Northampton County lists it as about five miles one way and open to walkers and bicyclists.<ref>{{Cite web
