Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield is a place to experience Civil War history on the ground: quiet woods, surviving earthworks and a driving route connecting key sites. The National Park Service’s tour begins at the exhibit shelter beside Laurel Hill, where the battle opened, and leads to the Mule Shoe Salient, the Bloody Angle and other landmarks. <ref>{{Cite web
The fighting lasted from May 8 to May 21, 1864, during the Overland Campaign. Visitors can follow the battlefield’s story by car or on foot; trails range from a short Bloody Angle walk to a longer loop through much of the preserved landscape. Check the park’s current conditions and operating information before setting out. <ref>{{Cite web
== Why visit Spotsylvania Court House Battlefield? ==
This is a landscape best explored at a thoughtful pace. The battlefield’s woods and earthworks help make sense of how the armies fought for control of the ground, while the marked stops connect individual places to the larger, two-week battle. The Bloody Angle, in particular, gives the history a powerful sense of place: the National Park Service describes more than 20 hours of close fighting there on May 12, 1864. <ref>{{Cite web
}}</ref>

The battlefield is part of [[Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park]], which preserves several important sites from the Civil War. Unlike a museum visit, time here is spent moving between outdoor landmarks; consider pairing the driving tour with a walk along one of the marked trails.

== Start here ==
Begin at the Spotsylvania Battlefield Exhibit Shelter, at 9550 Grant Drive West in Spotsylvania. From Fredericksburg, the NPS directions take visitors via Business Route 1, Courthouse Road (Virginia Route 208) and Brock Road to Grant Drive. If using navigation, the park also lists GPS coordinates for the shelter. <ref>{{Cite web
}}</ref>

From there, follow the numbered stops on the Spotsylvania driving-tour map. The NPS also provides park maps and guided-tour content through its app; downloading maps and tour materials before arrival can help with planning. <ref>{{Cite web
== History and significance ==
The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was fought from May 8 to May 21, 1864, as Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant continued south after the Battle of the Wilderness and sought to move around Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army. Both sides built extensive earthworks as the armies maneuvered around the crossroads and contested the surrounding ground. <ref>{{Cite web
}}</ref>

The Mule Shoe was a large bend, or salient, in the Confederate line. After Colonel Emory Upton’s assault on May 10, Grant launched a larger attack there on May 12. Union troops captured much of the position, but Confederate counterattacks followed, and intense fighting centered on a bend in the works that became known as the Bloody Angle. The battle continued for days as Grant shifted his army and resumed the campaign south. <ref>{{Cite web

== Planning a visit ==
The battlefield grounds are listed as open daily from sunrise to sunset. The exhibit shelter is an open-air stop, and the park’s current hours page lists restroom availability there from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Operating details can change, so confirm conditions and schedules with the NPS before traveling. <ref>{{Cite web

The driving tour and walking routes are outdoors. Wear shoes suited to uneven ground, bring water, and allow time for stops beyond the drive itself. The Bloody Angle Trail is 1.1 miles; the Spotsylvania History Trail is listed as a 5.7-mile loop. Review the park’s maps and trail information for current routes before choosing a walk. <ref>{{Cite web
