Prince Edward County is best explored as a collection of connected experiences, with [[Farmville, Virginia|Farmville]] as its historic and practical hub. Visitors come for the Robert Russa Moton Museum and the county’s civil rights history, then branch out to the High Bridge rail trail, local historic sites and outdoor recreation. The county was formed in 1754; Farmville, founded in 1798, is now home to the regional visitor center. <ref>{{Cite web
== Why visit Prince Edward County? ==
Prince Edward County brings together several distinct reasons to visit: a significant chapter in the national struggle over school desegregation, a historic downtown, a long rail trail and lake-centered recreation. Farmville makes a convenient base for combining museums and local history with a day outdoors. The regional tourism organization presents Farmville and the wider county as Virginia’s Heartland, with visitor information and trip-planning resources centered in town. <ref>{{Cite web
|access-date=2026-10-22
}}</ref>

It is also a place to allow time for reflection. The 1951 student strike at Robert Russa Moton High School led to the Davis case, one of the cases considered together in the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision. The county’s history includes the subsequent closure of its public schools from 1959 to 1964 rather than desegregation. Visiting the Moton Museum and the county’s self-guided civil rights sites offers important context for understanding that history. <ref>{{Cite web
== History and character ==
Prince Edward County was formed in 1754 from Amelia County. Farmville grew as a town in the county, and its historic district preserves a record of the area’s commercial, residential and industrial development. The county’s history is especially consequential in the civil rights movement: in 1951, students at the all-Black Robert Russa Moton High School organized a strike protesting overcrowded and unequal conditions. Their action became the basis of Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, one of the cases resolved in Brown v. Board of Education. <ref>{{Cite web

After the Supreme Court’s 1954 decision, Prince Edward County officials closed the county’s public schools from 1959 through 1964 rather than integrate them. The Moton Museum preserves and interprets the student protest and the county’s role in this history. The county also has Civil War-era sites and routes, including High Bridge and Rice’s Depot, which are included in the local tourism account of Lee’s Retreat. <ref>{{Cite web
== Planning a visit ==
Farmville is a practical base for exploring the county, with the regional visitor center in downtown and several major heritage and recreation destinations within the wider area. Begin with the county’s tourism site or visitor center to plan a route, particularly if you want to combine a museum visit with a trail or park outing. <ref>{{Cite web
Check official attraction and state-park pages shortly before travel for current hours, closures, trail access, seasonal facilities and admission or parking details. High Bridge Trail has multiple access points, and park conditions or construction can affect which approach is most convenient. The Moton Museum also posts its current guest schedule and visit guidance online. <ref>{{Cite web
