Occoneechee State Park occupies a wooded stretch of shoreline on John H. Kerr Reservoir, the large lake commonly known as Buggs Island Lake. Anglers and boaters come for the water; visitors who prefer land-based outings can explore the park’s trails and outdoor facilities. The park is near Clarksville in southern Virginia, close to the state line.<ref>{{Cite web
This is a place where recreation and history share the same landscape. A visitor center and museum introduce the area’s Indigenous history, while the Plantation Trail follows land associated with a 19th-century plantation. The park also offers cabins, campsites and other facilities for overnight stays; check the official park page before planning around current operating details, availability or lake access.<ref>{{Cite web
== History and significance ==
The park takes its name from the Occoneechee people, who lived on an island in the area before the creation of the reservoir. Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation recounts that conflict involving Nathaniel Bacon’s militia in 1676 devastated the Occoneechee community, and that surviving members moved south. The reservoir later flooded the historic island, changing the landscape in which that history unfolded.<ref>{{Cite web

In 1839, William Townes established Occoneechee Plantation on land that includes part of today’s park. The plantation house burned in 1898. Construction of John H. Kerr Dam began in 1947 and was completed in 1953, forming the reservoir also known as Buggs Island Lake. Virginia began leasing the park land for recreation in 1968.<ref>{{Cite web
