On the Potomac River south of Washington, D.C., Mason Neck is a peninsula of woodland, marsh, and water. The refuge’s trails and observation points offer a close-up look at this habitat—and a chance to watch for bald eagles, herons, waterfowl, and other wildlife. The refuge was established in 1969 as the first national wildlife refuge created specifically to protect bald eagles.<ref>{{Cite web

This is a place for a nature walk rather than a developed visitor complex: public exploration is limited to designated trails, with paved routes as well as a longer unpaved loop. The refuge shares an entrance area with [[Mason Neck State Park]], but the two are separate protected areas; check the refuge’s current trail and access information before setting out.<ref>{{Cite web
== Why visit Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge? ==
The appeal is the contrast between a wild-feeling peninsula and the nearby metropolitan area. Forest trails lead to marsh views, and the refuge’s conservation mission makes wildlife observation part of the experience rather than a guarantee of sightings. Bald eagles and great blue herons may be seen throughout the year; seasonal birdlife adds to the interest for patient visitors with binoculars.<ref>{{Cite web

The refuge also has a conservation story with a distinctly local beginning. Community advocacy led by Elizabeth Hartwell helped prevent a proposed development and secure federal protection for the peninsula and its eagles. The refuge was later renamed in her honor.<ref>{{Cite web
== Start here ==
For an accessible, relatively short outing, begin at the Joseph V. Gartlan Jr. Great Marsh Trail. The paved route follows a wooded ridge to an observation platform overlooking the marsh. For a longer walk through forest, choose Woodmarsh Trail; for a paved route that connects toward the state park, use High Point Trail. Confirm current conditions and any seasonal closures before choosing a route.<ref>{{Cite web
== History and significance ==
The peninsula has a long human history. The Fish & Wildlife Service recounts Captain John Smith’s 1608 description of the area and the presence of Dogue Indigenous communities before colonial settlement. The name Mason’s Neck reflects the prominent Mason family’s landholding; later plantation agriculture altered the landscape before fields were abandoned and forest returned.<ref>{{Cite web

In the early 1960s, a proposed planned community and airport prompted local opposition. Elizabeth van Laer Speer Hartwell organized to protect the peninsula and its bald eagles. The refuge was established on February 1, 1969, and Congress approved the name Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge in 2006. Today, the Fish & Wildlife Service manages habitat for bald eagles, herons, and other birds while providing limited opportunities for public recreation.<ref>{{Cite web
== Planning a visit ==
The refuge is in Lorton, Virginia, and is reached by road via Gunston Road. The Fish & Wildlife Service provides driving directions and current refuge hours; hours vary by season, and the refuge may close on designated hunt days. Verify access, hours, and any closures with the Service before traveling.<ref>{{Cite web

Choose footwear for the trail you plan to walk: paved paths suit a smoother outing, while the Woodmarsh loop is unpaved and can be muddy after rain. Portions of Woodmarsh Trail may close during eagle nesting season. The refuge asks visitors to pack out their trash; follow posted rules and stay on established trails to protect habitat.<ref>{{Cite web
