== History and character ==
The area that became Fluvanna County passed through several earlier county jurisdictions: it was part of Henrico, then Goochland and later Albemarle. Fluvanna was established from Albemarle County in 1777 and named for the Fluvanna River, a name used for the James River west of Columbia.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.fluvanna.gov/explore/page/fluvanna-history |title=Fluvanna History |website=Fluvanna County |publisher=Fluvanna County, Virginia |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.lva.virginia.gov/collections/ccmf/VA/VA091 |title=Fluvanna County Microfilm |website=Library of Virginia |publisher=Library of Virginia |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref>

The county’s past includes Indigenous history, colonial-era settlement and the American Revolution. The Fluvanna County Historical Society identifies Rassawek as a Monacan town and Point of Fork as the site of a Revolutionary War arsenal. In 1781, British forces destroyed the arsenal. The society also preserves records and stories that document the county’s history, including the experience of enslaved people.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://fluvannahistory.org/ |title=Fluvanna Historical Society |website=Fluvanna History |publisher=Fluvanna County Historical Society |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.fluvanna.gov/explore/page/fluvanna-history |title=Fluvanna History |website=Fluvanna County |publisher=Fluvanna County, Virginia |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref>

Rivers shaped the county’s growth and commerce. The county’s history describes improvements to the Rivanna for navigation and the James River and Kanawha Canal along its southern boundary; the arrival of the railroad in 1881 displaced the canals as a transport route.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.fluvanna.gov/explore/page/fluvanna-history |title=Fluvanna History |website=Fluvanna County |publisher=Fluvanna County, Virginia |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref>

== Planning a visit ==
Palmyra is a useful starting point for county history, with museums and historic sites in and around the county seat. Pleasant Grove Park brings together museums and outdoor recreation. The county and local visitor guide also list river activities, farms, vineyards, arts and events, so a visit can be tailored to the season and interests.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://findfluvanna.org/ |title=Find Fluvanna |website=Find Fluvanna |publisher=Fluvanna County Economic Development Office |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=https://www.fluvanna.gov/parksrec |title=Parks and Recreation |website=Fluvanna County |publisher=Fluvanna County, Virginia |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref>

Check official county and attraction pages before traveling for current opening hours, event dates, admission, trail conditions and any arrangements needed for tours or river access. For local history research and museum information, consult the Fluvanna County Historical Society.<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://fluvannahistory.org/historic-sites/ |title=Visit |website=Fluvanna History |publisher=Fluvanna County Historical Society |access-date=2026-10-23}}</ref>
