Virginia has several historic sites associated with debtors’ imprisonment. The restored Debtors’ Prison in Accomac is open seasonally for tours, while a colonial-era debtor jail survives in Worsham. If you’re planning a visit to Accomac, check the Town of Accomac’s current visitor information before setting out; tour dates and arrangements may change.<ref>{{Cite web
The Accomac Debtors’ Prison
The Accomac site is on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, beside the historic Accomack County Courthouse complex in downtown Accomac. The Town describes the building as a rare surviving part of the area’s former jail complex.<ref>{{Cite web

The building was originally constructed in 1783 as the county jailer’s residence. It was converted into a debtors’ prison in 1824 and used for debtors and minor offenders until imprisonment for debt was abolished in Virginia in 1849. The original jail and its walls were later demolished, leaving the former jailer’s house as the surviving structure.<ref>{{Cite web
Visiting in Accomac
The Town says the restored building reopened for a special fall-tour season in September 2026, with docents and a historical collection. It describes the site as open seasonally for public tours, educational programs, and special events. The Town’s visitor page does not give a regular schedule, so confirm upcoming dates and visitor arrangements directly with the Town before traveling.<ref>{{Cite web
Other Virginia sites
A different Debtor’s Prison stands in Worsham, Virginia, in Prince Edward County. Authorized in 1786 as a “Gaol for Debtors,” the log building was later converted to a residence. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources notes that historic-register properties are not necessarily open to the public; check access before making a special trip.<ref>{{Cite web

In Williamsburg, a separate debtor-prison structure was added to the Public Gaol in 1711–1712. Colonial Williamsburg’s historical report describes the prison complex and its later alterations; consult Colonial Williamsburg for current visitor information about the historic area.<ref>{{Cite web
Why these sites matter
Debtors’ prisons show how financial hardship could become a matter of confinement in earlier Virginia. The surviving buildings also tell different local stories: Accomac’s former jailer’s house was adapted for use as a debtor prison in the nineteenth century, while Worsham’s purpose-built log jail reflects an earlier county-seat setting. At Williamsburg, the debtor cells were part of a larger public gaol that also held other categories of prisoners.<ref>{{Cite web
