Shenandoah National Park follows the crest of Virginia’s Blue Ridge for 105 miles, with Skyline Drive linking its north and south ends. Pullouts open views toward the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the Piedmont to the east; trails lead away from the road into forest, mountain hollows and open viewpoints. With more than 500 miles of hiking trails, the park can suit a quick scenic drive as well as a longer day on foot.<ref>{{Cite web

A first visit is easier if you choose a section of the drive rather than trying to see everything at once. Stop at a visitor center for current conditions and maps, then pair a few overlooks with a hike that fits your time and ability. Park conditions, services and road access can change with weather and season, so check the National Park Service’s alerts and operating information before setting out.

== Why visit Shenandoah National Park? ==
Shenandoah’s appeal is the combination of an easy-to-follow scenic route and many opportunities to leave the car behind. Skyline Drive has overlooks along its length, while the trail network reaches waterfalls, rocky viewpoints, meadows and quieter stretches of forest. Even a short stop can give you a sense of the ridgeline and its broad views; a longer visit can unfold as a series of hikes and stops.

The park is also a way to encounter the layered human history of the Blue Ridge. Its landscape includes traces of communities that lived here before the park was established, as well as the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, whose crews helped build trails, overlooks and park structures.

== Start here ==
Begin by choosing one of the four entrance stations—Front Royal, Thornton Gap, Swift Run Gap or Rockfish Gap—and check the current status of Skyline Drive before you go. Most park facilities and many trailheads are reached from the drive, but some trails, including access points for Old Rag Mountain and Whiteoak Canyon, begin at the park boundary. Follow directions to an official entrance or trailhead; the NPS cautions that gated service roads are not public entrances.<ref>{{Cite web

For orientation, the northern Dickey Ridge Visitor Center is at mile 4.6, and the Byrd Visitor Center is at mile 51 near Big Meadows. Both provide park information and exhibits; check the current operating schedule, since hours and seasonal openings may vary. The NPS notes that visitor centers close when Skyline Drive is closed for severe weather.<ref>{{Cite web

== History and significance ==
Congress authorized Shenandoah National Park in 1926; it was established in 1935 and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 3, 1936. The Civilian Conservation Corps helped shape the visitor experience, building trails, overlooks, roads and other features during the park’s early years.<ref>{{Cite web

The park’s creation also came at a profound cost to people already living in the Blue Ridge. In the late 1920s and 1930s, Virginia acquired land for the proposed park, and more than 500 families and individuals were displaced. The NPS’s interpretation of this history recognizes the mountain communities and livelihoods disrupted by the park’s creation, alongside the conservation and recreation purposes that followed.<ref>{{Cite web

== Planning a visit ==
Shenandoah National Park is open year-round, but Skyline Drive may close in whole or in part during inclement weather. The NPS advises visitors to check alerts for timely updates; some facilities operate seasonally, and posted operating dates can change.<ref>{{Cite web

An entrance pass is required, including for visitors entering on foot or by bicycle. The park has moved to cashless payment for entrance fees, so verify accepted payment methods, current pass prices and any other fees on the official NPS page before travel.<ref>{{Cite web

Pack water, suitable footwear and layers, and carry a map or other reliable navigation. Before a hike, review trail conditions and make sure the route fits your group’s ability and available daylight. If Skyline Drive is closed, do not assume that a boundary trailhead is an easy alternative: NPS notes that these access points may be remote, have limited parking and pass near private land.<ref>{{Cite web
