== History and character ==
Thomas Harrison deeded land for public use in 1779, including ground used for the county courthouse at what is now Court Square. Harrisonburg developed as the county seat of Rockingham County and later grew as a regional center. The city’s official history recounts its changing civic life, growth, and connection to James Madison University.<ref>{{Cite web

The area’s past is more layered than a single founding story: the official tourism history describes settlement, labor, faith, displacement, and community change across the Valley. Downtown’s historic buildings and visitor-center exhibits offer ways to encounter some of these local stories; the Harrisonburg History Trail provides a self-guided route through sites in the city and surrounding Rockingham County.<ref>{{Cite web

== Planning a visit ==
Downtown is a practical place to begin, with museums, shops, restaurants, and public art clustered within a district described by the tourism office as walkable. For a longer outing, plan time for the arboretum or outdoor recreation in the surrounding Valley.<ref>{{Cite web

Hours, exhibits, events, trail conditions, and visitor access can change. Confirm current details with the official attraction, university, or land-management site before traveling. The Harrisonburg Visitor Center is located at the Hardesty-Higgins House, 212 South Main Street; consult the city’s tourism site for current visitor services and contact information.<ref>{{Cite web
