The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are a broad network of public lands in Virginia’s Appalachian region, with portions extending into West Virginia and Kentucky. Together, they encompass more than 1.8 million acres, from wooded mountain slopes and cold streams to open high-country balds. Rather than a single park with one entrance, the forests are made up of many separate recreation areas, trails and access points. <ref>{{Cite web

A visit can mean a short waterfall walk, a day on the {{VIRGINIA WIKI LINK|Appalachian Trail}}, an overnight at a campground, or a drive through mountain scenery. The right starting point depends on which part of the forests you want to explore: the Forest Service’s recreation listings and current alerts can help you check trail details, facilities, closures and access before setting out. <ref>{{Cite web

== Why visit the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests? ==
These forests offer a way to experience Virginia’s mountain country at many scales. A forest road may lead to a quiet picnic site or trailhead; a longer route can climb to ridgelines, cross streams and link into a broader backcountry journey. Hiking, biking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, boating and other outdoor activities are available at designated places across the forest system. <ref>{{Cite web

}}</ref>

The forests are also a gateway to some of Virginia’s best-known mountain landscapes and trails. The {{VIRGINIA WIKI LINK|Blue Ridge Mountains}} and the Appalachian Trail are part of the wider experience, while the southwest includes Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, with high-elevation scenery, forest trails and mountain balds. For a trip with a particular destination in mind, choose the recreation area first; distances between sites can be substantial.

== Start here ==
Plan around one recreation area, trail or district rather than treating the forests as one compact attraction. The Forest Service’s online recreation listings can be searched by activity and site, and the agency recommends carrying a reliable map for trail outings. Confirm the specific site’s current status, road access, facilities and any permits or fees before leaving. <ref>{{Cite web

For a first visit, match the outing to your group and conditions: a developed day-use area is a different proposition from a steep trail with stream crossings or a remote forest road. Bring water, suitable footwear and a route map, and check weather and alerts. Conditions can change, and some access roads and facilities may be seasonal or temporarily closed.

== History and significance ==
The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are administered together, but remain distinct national forests. The Jefferson National Forest extends across the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia and includes small portions of West Virginia and Kentucky. The forests were administratively combined in 1995. <ref>{{Cite web

The landscape reflects a long history of human use and federal land management. The Forest Service’s account of the George Washington National Forest notes that the first Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the nation was established at Camp Roosevelt, in Virginia. CCC crews built and maintained roads, trails and facilities during the Great Depression, some of which remain part of the forest’s recreation infrastructure. <ref>{{Cite web

== Planning a visit ==
* '''Pick your destination carefully.''' Forest recreation sites are spread across a large region, and travel between them may take longer than a map suggests. Use the official recreation listings and maps to identify the correct trailhead or facility.
* '''Check current conditions.''' Review Forest Service alerts, site status and trail information close to your visit. Weather, maintenance and other conditions can affect access.
* '''Bring navigation and supplies.''' Carry a reliable map, water and appropriate clothing. Drinking water is not provided at every trail or recreation site; check the listing for your destination.
* '''Confirm camping details.''' Campground services, operating seasons, reservations and fees vary. Check the individual campground’s current information before travel.
* '''Respect the setting.''' Follow posted rules, stay on permitted routes, pack out trash and use care around wildlife, streams and fire.

Visitor information, recreation listings, maps and alerts are available through the official Forest Service website. Site-specific information is more useful than general assumptions about access or facilities across the forests.
