<div class="vw-attraction-intro">
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a protected stretch of barrier-island habitat on the Virginia end of Assateague Island. Beaches, dunes, salt marshes and maritime forest make the refuge a rewarding place to walk, watch birds and look for the wild ponies associated with the island. It was established in 1943 to protect migratory birds, and today also supports other wildlife and wildlife-oriented public use.<ref>{{Cite web

The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, while the National Park Service provides services at the beach and the Herbert H. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center within the refuge. Hours, fees, facilities and beach conditions can change, so check the agencies’ current visitor information before setting out. The refuge entrance is at 8231 Beach Road, reached from Chincoteague Island.<ref>{{Cite web

== Why visit the refuge? ==
This is a place to experience the quieter, wilder side of Virginia’s Eastern Shore: scan marsh pools for birds, follow a trail through coastal woodland, or spend time by the Atlantic shore. The refuge lies along the Atlantic Flyway, making it a destination for birdwatching throughout the year; the species and viewing conditions vary by season.<ref>{{Cite web

The familiar Chincoteague ponies are another reason people come. They are managed on refuge land under a special-use permit, but they are wild animals: watch from a distance and never feed or approach them. The refuge also preserves Assateague Lighthouse, a historic landmark visible from the refuge road and reached by a short trail.<ref>{{Cite web

== Start here ==
For a first visit, stop at the visitor center to orient yourself, check current conditions and pick up a trail map. The Herbert H. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center offers exhibits and visitor information; the National Park Service’s hours page lists its seasonal schedule and available services. Check that page before you go, as hours and closures may change.<ref>{{Cite web

}}</ref>

If pony viewing is a priority, the refuge suggests looking west from Beach Road or trying the overlook on the Woodland Trail. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, so allow time to pause and scan rather than expecting animals to appear on cue.<ref>{{Cite web

== History and significance ==
The refuge was established in 1943 to protect migratory birds, especially migrating and wintering waterfowl. Its conservation purpose has since expanded to include threatened and endangered species and other wildlife, alongside public activities compatible with protecting natural resources.<ref>{{Cite web

Assateague Lighthouse is part of that layered landscape. The first lighthouse on the island was built in 1833; the taller brick lighthouse visitors see today was completed in 1867. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the active navigational light, while the Fish & Wildlife Service is responsible for preserving the lighthouse.<ref>{{Cite web

== Planning a visit ==
* **Check current conditions first.** Refuge roads, trails and facilities have seasonal schedules, and beach access can change. Review the Fish & Wildlife Service and National Park Service updates close to your visit.
* **Budget for entry.** The refuge’s fee page lists current pass options and prices; rules depend on the pass and how you enter. Pedestrians and bicyclists are listed as free, while motor-vehicle visitors should confirm the current fee and payment arrangements before arrival.<ref>{{Cite web

 |publisher=U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

}}</ref>
* **Bring water and food.** The National Park Service advises visitors to bring what they need; food options on the island are limited. Keep food secured so wildlife cannot reach it.<ref>{{Cite web

* **Prepare for coastal conditions.** Sun, wind and biting insects can affect comfort, particularly in warmer months. Wear suitable footwear for sand and trails, and check beach and surf safety information before swimming.
* **Give wildlife space.** Pets are prohibited on the refuge, including in vehicles, with the exception of qualifying service animals under refuge rules. Do not feed or harass wildlife, and stay on public roads, marked trails and other designated visitor areas.<ref>{{Cite web

* **Check beach status specifically.** Beach access and parking may be subject to closures or construction. Confirm with the National Park Service before traveling to the beach area.<ref>{{Cite web
